What did you think of Mr. Cornell's first televised Who story? Poll open for a fortnight as normal.

Re: Rate "Fathers Day"
I loved this story. The prelude and coda featuring Jackie and Rose jnr was so unlike anything ever seen on Doctor Who before, or indeed since. It did touch a very raw nerve at the time, as it had only been five years since I had lost my father. Father's Day made me cry, weep buckets. It was disconcerting, watching the DWC immediately afterwards, seeing the BBC putting as much effort into this episode as the would a historical drama. The 1980's were my teenage years, definitely not history.

4/5 for me. A very good story, but it feels a bit manipulative - and subsequent alt-universe crossovers have undoubtedly diminished its impact.

3/5 from me; Although it's a good story and it's very well handled, and although the performances from Eccelston and Dingwall make the episode work, and although it makes a couple of character points (Mickey is emotionally scarred by the events, hence his instinctive cling to the nearest female figure later in life), it feels too orchestrated and the emotional beats too forced.
Luckily for us, it turns out Pete Tyler's a complete loser who redeems himself in standard Doctor Who fashion - by dying. Thus giving us the interesting idea that sometimes the Dad you imagine you would have had is a much better parent than the one you actually had.
Also, how much more fun would this story have been if, upon saving Pete, the narrative jumps tracks completely and turns into a pastiche of Only Fools and Horses. Pete is still trying to make his way in the world, assisted by his bright and capable daughter and supported by the understated love of an exasperated Jackie.
It would have been like "Bread", but in London.
I also wonder whether, having got back to the TARDIS, the Doctor would actually have disappeared for good. I think he would have. It might have changed Tennant's teary-eyed "They break my hearts" explanation of why he travels alone into a stone faced "They break my spacetime continuum".

4/5 from me. Eccleston's great as usual and I've always liked Shaun Dingwall. Good stuff from Billie too.
The only downside, having people ask "Why didn't the Reapers appear?" ever after.

Re: Rate "Fathers Day"
I think Father's Day is the story that really cemented, at least for me, Rose Tyler as a companion. Billie was superb in this story, and she had to be given that her character was even more important to the story than the Doctor.
4/5 from me.
