We have arrived at Episode 11, and this one is a Toby Whithouse script.
So, what did you think of The God Complex? Mental or muddy? Let's hear your thoughts.
As per normal policy, this thread will be unlocked immediately following UK transmission of the story this Saturday evening. North American viewers: beware of spoilers if you venture into this thread before transmission of the story on BBC-America later in the day.

I'm rather undecided, didn't live up to what I'd been told tbh. All praise Lord Nimon though. Weakling Scum!

Re: Rate "The God Complex"
Excellent stuff - first episode in ages that I've actually got the desire to want to rewatch. Reminded me a bit of Gridlock - and not just in being a stealth sequel to a classic series story - in the way it looked at the meaning of faith and didn't come up with easy answers.
When Moffat goes, I really want Whithouse to take over the series now.
ETA: Oh, and the Doctor's room clearly contained the Twelfth Doctor.

Which one? The 4th Doctor story or the 7th Doctor story?

'he's in the Power Complex'
'that fits'
which perhaps makes the title of this one Toby Whithouse achieving the greatest obscure fanboy reference ever.
Re: Rate "The God Complex"
Well, that was interesting. It was one of those stories I hate, where The Doctor wins the day, solves the threat and stops any further deaths, but cannot save the secondary characters he meets whilst he was doing it, except for the one that least deserves saving.
The Big Question has to be: "How many drunken nights in conventions in bad hotels has Toby Whithouse had in his life?"
Is it just me, or have the past three episodes been homages to earlier stories. Night Terrors was an homage to Chimes of Midnight. The Girl who Waited was an homage to Ark in Space, and this week it was a tribute to Curse of Fenric.
David Walliam's Little Britain meets Wind in the Willows act was exactly what I was expecting. I knew Rita was toast, to obviously "Future Companion" material.

I was thinking that Amy's room was number 7. And the other time the Doctor has deliberately set out to destroy a companion's faith in him was in The Curse of Fenric, which is also about growing up. It's the one where Ace tells the Doctor "I'm not a little girl any more".
So maybe Whitehouse has pulled off a double.

Re: Rate "The God Complex"
More or less, yeah, inasmuch as The Valeyard represents him gone wrong. It doesn't have to be specifically him as evil, but him as being ultimately dangerous to the people around him regardless of what his good intentions were. God Complex indeed. The Co=Ordinator wrote:Sorry, but it was obviously The Valeyard.
I'll have to give it another look to settle on a score, but I'm thinking a 4 or 5. Good stuff.

Then why the cloister bell? The Doctor's existence is wrapped around the TARDIS. That Police Box is what he ultimately has his faith in, and this was a story about the things that challenge faith. I think he opened room 11, and saw the TARDIS dying.
Great story, a rather Hand Of Fear-esque dismissal of the companions, and some challenging narrative queues. Pardon me while I go and fire up an old Eagles CD. "You can check in any time, but you can never leave. / They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast."
4/5 from me.

i thought that- although, and don't laugh here, it could have been adric. the doctor having faith in his companions, his worst thing is having them killed. which is why he dumped amy and rory....

Initiating ship to outer world communication...
Greetings!
Having polled the crew for their reactions to this weeks story I can report that the majority consensus of four-hundred and forty-one of us is that we enjoyed it more than we had the preceding week's adventure. (We discounted the four-hundreth and forty-second crew member's contrary opinion. Mainly because he has dubious taste).
So our collective rating is 4/5
All hail Eocene supremacy!

Re: Rate "The God Complex"
I’m curiously undecided about “The God Complex”. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy it. But, for me at least, there was something strangely emotionally engaging about the actual way the events of the story unfolded – and I can’t quite put my finger on what or why that should be. Toby Whithouse is an excellent writer, the guest cast was good, the Monster was very well realised design-wise; and I’m even willing not to think of the basic story as “Doctor Who’s Holodeck Hi-Jinks”. But ultimately it did leave me somewhat…untouched.
Odd. I really can’t work out why. Obviously I’ll give it another rewatch in an effort to reach a more in-depth conclusion. But for now at least, I’m prepared to give it a respectable 3/5.
