The RTD era polls return for their Autumn run, and kicking us off is the 2006 Christmas Special. Your votes and thoughts welcome in equal measure. Poll open for 14 days as usual. Smile

I can decide whether to give this a 3 or a 4. Not as good as TCI, but certainly better than the likes of TND or ACC.

It's a grower - didn't like it much at first, but over time I came to love Donna and I think I was on a downer because it wasn't TCI. 4/5.

4/5. I liked Donna from the start, loved the music and the mad roadway chase. The cast seemed to be having a lot of fun.

It's really just a series of big, mad ideas stitched together in a more or less random order to fill some television time.

Like - a secret base under a major London landmark! Draining the Thames! Digging down to something in the Earth's core! Giant spiders! A Christmas star that kills people! That is then shot at by tanks! Santa robots! The Tardis in a car chase! A woman in a wedding dress!

Plus, the stunt casting is shocking. Catherine Tate? Yeah, there's no sense in which that's capitalising on the successful run of her eponymous comedy show.

Good lord, with light entertainment casting like that and with a series of big, mad ideas just thrown together and plugged into a barely feasible technobabble plot, it's like the savage love child of John Nathan Turner, Eric Saward and that Moffat bloke.

In short, apart from the crappy technobabble, I rather liked it.

Like Rich, this one has grown on me over time. My first reaction upon seeing it was "Why the H-E-double toothpicks did RTD find it necessary to give us another Tegan Jovanka?" Fortunately, that rather harsh assessment has softened over the last five years.

It really is an ultimately mad story, designed to show the Doctor (and the audience) that he does, in fact, need someone.

3/5 from me.

Certainly see both sides to the coin on this one. Taken on its own, I must echo Zoltar here. The spider queen was played more than a bit too campy, but still, had a good ride. I found the adventure, what with the TARDIS car chase and all, more amusing and having more point (Doctor going unchecked and all that) than the prior special.

On the other, in series context, I recall feeing a bit haunted - not whilst watching, as I enjoyed it - by the sense that it was reverting to earlier Doctor/companion modes in a way that was forced a bit heavily and unnaturally (just as Rose had been handled a bit unnaturally and inconsistently in the 2nd series, in my humble), perhaps owing a lot to pressures from some fans (in front and behind camera). Of course that point proved more applicable to Martha Jones in the following series than with Donna. I do think Donna worked out well on the whole and was very strong at times.

There's quite a bit of that in Who, where one might take a given show in one light on its own, but feel differently if viewing it all in context with the show as a whole.

On its own: 4/5
In the series: 3/5

Which should I tick?
