The second story. A story of legend. The first ever appearance of Skaro's finest.
What do you think of "The Daleks"? Have your say!

Re: Rate "The Daleks"
I love it. The Daleks have character, the Doctor is a git, Ian is suitably heroic in his cardigan, and the Thals all need a clip round the ear.
It's probably my second-favourite dalek story ever. 4/5

A good story, but it's at least two episodes too long. A very high 3/5 from me.

4/5 Wonderfully atmospheric, but with a couple of limp performances and duff characterisation (mostly in the second half). I gave it 5/5 though. We're still discussing Dr Who today, aren't we?

Re: Rate "The Daleks"
It's a generally ace story, it's only one episode too long because <richard burton> no one would have believed </richard burton> that people would be more interested in the Daleks than the Thals. So the Thals get unwarranted screen time.
Although a race of pacifist farmers who have decided to live off the land in bondage trousers and bodywarmers is, frankly, groundbreaking even for the 60s.
The Doctor is awesome. Ian and Barbara are likewise awesome. For a show that was slapped together on a budget of £2 8s 6d and a bag of chips for the crew, it's amazing.

As fer the Daleks, well it's too long and Richard Martin's direction is poo (although Chris Barry's is very good). But it's a totally seminal story, as Dave said realised for 4/5ths of bugger all -so 4/5 from me.

This very nicely sums up my thoughts as well. You also get the sense, as this is the early 60s, that the show is really trying to be experiemental in its story telling. The problem is, because this is still the early days of television, at certain points, the story feels a bit more like a radio play with pictures. Still, the introduction of the Daleks is what truly cemented this show in with fandom. I'll give it a 4/5 for that.

After pondering it a bit, I'm going with a 4/5 as well.

really?
I would have said that the way it's put together is much more theatre than radio. I also got the feeling that there were attempts to emulate movies that were stymied by the size of the studio as well as budget concerns. There are some shots that take place in the Dalek city which look cramped, as if the camera just can't go where the director wants it to.

I've always found the book rather odd, to be honest. Sort of a Boy's Own Mills & Boon...

Re: Rate "The Daleks"
As a sci-fi retelling of the King Solomon's Mnes style of adventure Romance, it's hard to beat. A touch long, but rollicking good fun. It'd be crap without Ian and Babs, mind - it's still very much their show at this point.
