Rate "The Moonbase"

Post by Patrick on Sat Aug 25, 2012 10:24 am

The year is 2070, and on the moon, Earth now has a new technology called "the Gravitron," capable of controlling the Earth's weather.  But a suspicious plague has befallen the crew on the moon.  Enter into this picture the Doctor and three time travellers, and the second appearance of the Cybermen.

So, what did you think?  Out of this world, or mere moon dust?  Let's be hearing from you!

I have a confession to make about this one.  Even though it's missing two episodes, I found it some time ago on YouTube.  They filled the missing episodes with still shots over which the actual recorded dialogue could be heard.  And I felt compelled to watch it for personal reasons.  You see, I was born the day before episode 2 was transmitted in the UK.  (Would that mean I was born under the sign of the Cybermen?)

What I like about this story is its almost claustrophobic feel.  It created real atmosphere and tension.  This, you can tell, is where Team Troughton was really beginning to hit its stride.  5/5 for me, although admittedly, some of that may be my sentimental attachment to it.

The visual depiction of the virus terrified me as a kid. As did the Cyberman under the sheet reveal. It's a brilliant base under siege story, far superior to the Tenth Planet. 5/5. Smile
