I'd be nice if BBC-America started showing them before the end of summer. They've been recycling re-runs of the last few series for months now.

Icelandic Volcano Eruption Explained!

Post by Patrick on Sun Apr 18, 2010 9:20 am

So now we know for sure! That erupting volcano in Iceland- the one with a name that looks like your cat typed it while rolling around on your keyboard- we now know why it erupted in the first place, causing untold havoc on European and trans-Atlantic air traffic.

Top Gear!

It seems Top Gear was filming a segment involving the Toyota Hilux truck on the active volcano just hours before the main eruption happened...

From the Top Gear Blog

TopGear spotted at plane-paralysing volcano
Posted by Sam Philip
Friday April 16, 2010

As widely reported in the media this week, James May was spotted in Iceland days before the volcano eruption that paralysed British air space.

Today, experts worldwide have rushed to blame TopGear for the holiday-ruining cloud of ash and doom sweeping over the UK.

According to local media, the shaggy-haired television presenter was witnessed driving a modified Hilux to the rim of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano last week.

Though initially assumed that he was simply filming a feature for the the popular motoring television show, it has since been speculated that May’s purpose was far more devious.

“It has been scientifically proven that TopGear is responsible for almost every evil in the modern world, so the eruption of a furious tectonic force barely a week after Richard Clarkson’s ‘visit’ can hardly be viewed as mere coincidence,” says media commentator Annalisa Kneejerk.

“We have it on good authority that Jeremy Hammond drove one of his favourite Ferrari gas-guzzlers at 100mph, straight into the main magma chamber, which could quite easily have caused this geological catastrophe. Thankfully I’ve never watched the show.”

In other news, a government committee has blamed TopGear for the eco-unfriendly image of motorsports in the UK.

Clearly, the explanation comes down to Jeremy Clarkson asking "what could possibly go wrong?" while at the foot of an active volcano.

I assumed this was a spoof - did they actually film near the volcano just before it erupted?

A butterfly in Singapore flapped its wings. A volcano in Iceland erupted.

Yes. The limits of at least one Top Gear presenter remain undocumented...

Some say he could well survive the monsterous heat and pressure inside an active magma chamber, and that he's vowed to bring down Ryanair for making the loos in their aircraft pay-per-use.

All we know is...he's called The Stig.

The pictures speak for themselves. According to the article that linked me to Top Gear's spoof of the incident in their blog, they were filming near the volcano sometime early last week, while it was active.

I do not, however, believe the Top Gear production team managed to set the volcano off just to give them a colorful background against which to shoot. That strikes me as a little beyond even their capabilities.

Here's a rather troubling story: According to THIS STORY, The BBC is in a legal fight with publishing house HarperCollins, attempting to prevent the release of a book that reveals the identity of The Stig.

The new series premiered on BBC-America last night. James May's visit to the volcano was outstanding, but Jeremy's segment with the 3-wheeled Renault Robin stole the show for me. I could not stop laughing. Brilliant television, last night's episode.

Here's a nice little story to show the growing popularity of Top Gear on this side of the Atlantic. The CBS news magazine show "60 Minutes" just did a segment on Top Gear, and I found it rather fascinating.

CLICK HERE to watch the full segment (comes in at 14:46, but you will have to sit through a commercial right near the beginning.)

After watching it, you can scroll down to watch three extras not included in the televised segment: Clarkson on Cars, Top Gear in Alabama, and Top Gear's Wild Ride (featuring Clarkson, Hammond and May).

Did anyone watch tonight's 'first of two' Christmas Specials? I thought the way they dealt with the Stig was brilliant. However, for me the rest of the episode was no more than average.

Hopefully the Iraq to Bethlehem Special will be better fare.

I recorded it and have just finished watching. I agree with you - the handling of the Stig situation was handled hilarious. But yes, the rest paled in comparison. I'm sure the Special will be well up to the usual standard.

Yeah, the American road trip was a bit dull, and I suspect it didn't work out as well as they wanted given that about five minutes of it was spent talking about a burst tire.

I did notice Tiff Needell credited as 'Emergency Stig' at the end. I was wondering if they were going to end up bringing him in as the replacement, but then remembered one of the reasons for using the Stig is so that companies can send in their test drivers to do the hot laps for their new cars without anyone noticing (allegedly).
