We return to Victorian times, and catch up with Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax as they investigate the mysterious village of Sweetville - a place, we are told, where people move into, but from which no one ever comes back.  Enter the Doctor and Clara.  So what is the venom?  And who is responsible for the anti-mobile population of Sweetville, anyway.  (Truthfully, that would be Dame Diana Rigg, which ought to be enough of a reason to watch this episode, all by itself.)

So, what did you think of "The Crimson Horror"?  Did it leave you screaming, or did Sweetville leave a taste in your mouth not unlike sucking lemons?  This thread will open up upon transmission of the episode in the UK, so, North American members, just remember that if you venture in here before the episode airs on this side of the pond, you run the risk of being spoilered.

I thought it was very poor - a few good lines kept it from being a 1/5, but was a real mess IMO. If Gatiss was to take over as showrunner, that might just be the last straw for me - Who can be so much more than weak homages and pastiches, but not when he's writing it.

It was alright but nothing special. They should have got someone funny to add some jokes for Strax. I noticed that the Doctor was doing a bad accent that mocked the locals. They should do an episode in Jamaica.

Nick, nothing would be the last straw for me, unless it got as bad as the 1980s. But if Gattis got the top job I think it would get very boring very quickly.

I found this rather average. Not Gatiss' worst story, but by no means his best. I liked the Frankenstein's Monster motif, but the story itself was kind of milquetoast. I dunno, on repeated viewings, it might improve for me, but for the moment, I'm giving it a 3.

It went much too fast, which is what happens when you try to do a movie in approximately half the time a normal movie gives itself.

Too much happened too quickly and I gave less of a damn about everyone than I should have as a result. 2/5 - ineptly handled and should have been a two part story. Mr. Gatiss needs to write for the classic series, or we need to make the current team that slow burn stories can be brilliant too.

I enjoyed it but not as the last couple of weeks. Bit of a mixed bag of a run really, certainly not as consistant as the previous two half-series.

By the way, a certain Eocene I've been in touch with informed he "absolutely adored" The Crimson Horror, and thinks this a first for Gatiss, two strong stories in the same season.

  • I have to agree about the break-neck pace. It worked for the Ice
Warrior story, but this one needed time to develop and mature. I miss
the two parters. Mr Moffat said he would only give a story two episodes
if it deserved it, I'm starting to think that he can't spot the stories
    that "deserve it".
  • So, Victorian England with the Paternoster
Gang is the default setting for Doctor-Lite stories now. I did like the
notion of having The Doctor appear half way through and then have a
flashback to bring us up to speed.
  • Again, Catrin Stewart is Welsh, she is in the flagship drama production of BBC Cymru/Wales,
her character lives in a time when there were a hell of a lot of Welsh
women in service in London. Why does she need the Dick van Dyke accent?
  • I loved the Tom Tom gag.
  • Best quote of the series has to be "Do you know what these are?"
  • I
think Diana Rigg and Rachel Stirling were excellent. Although perhaps
Mrs Gillyflower should have had a less pronounced Yorkshire Accent.
  • I
can imagine the meeting between Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt where
Mr. G had to be told in a firm voice that no, he could not play the
mortuary attendant and that Jeremy, Stephen and Reece's services would
not be required for the episode.
  • Anyone else shout "Frying Tonight" as The Doctor was dropped into the vat of gunge?

The character is apparently not Welsh, and the accent is nowhere near Dick van Dyke. Help us understand why this is important.

I have to report that on second viewing, I liked this story a lot more. It does have a lot of clever bits in it. I really did like the Vastra/Jenny/Strax scenes.

I think what bothered me about this was the tacked-on ending involving the kids doing an internet search on pictures of their nanny, solely as a dovetail into next week's story. That really wasn't particularly well written. I mean, when did they have time to take a picture on board that nuclear sub? And even if they had, how would a picture taken inside a Russian nuclear sub at the height of the cold war end up on the internet?

The bit with the kids was really weak, mainly because we haven't really been introduced to them before, so don't really know anything about them or their relationship with Clara.

Compare it with Mickey Smith - there, we get introduced to him in the first episode, and when he returns in Aliens of London, it's no surprise that he's been doing research into the Doctor. Plus, he's had a year to do it, and it's quite possible he's been in contact with Clive's widow to get his information about the Doctor. Or look at the way Clyde and then Rani were introduced into SJA - characters who stumbled into the adventure, then found out what was going on, not just turning up on her doorstep having researched her whole background (and come to some rather wild conclusions).

I think they were on the sub a long time after. The Tardis did rematerialise at the south pole after all.

I gave the episode another 4, I enjoyed it and it couldn't get much more 'bioshock' if they tried, but I did feel the story was crammed (their all too long for forty five minuites this half and need an hour slot to do them justice) and their was no explanation of how the Doctor cured himself or Clara so thats why it didn't get a 5.

As for the kids having pictures of her. It did feel tacked on, but I thought it worked. I got the impression that they discovered info on her at school (makes sense that you may crop up in some history lesson at some point) and then they dug deeper.

Agreed. I'm very fond of Strax, mostly because he's not interested in being a human. Which is a relief.

In Battlefield, the Doctor discovers that at some point in his future he will be Merlin. And that incarnation of the Doctor will be ginger.

This may be why he's looking forward to going ginger himself.

This has nothing to do with the episode, but I thought I'd slap in a link to my now extremely occasional blog which goes into detail about why I'm currently very happy about Strax. People should read it, if they like that sort of thing.

Never did give a review. I loved it, watched it again that night. Is it flawed, for certain. The ending with the two kids could've been handled better, but I'm confident Gaiman will pay dividends on including them.

A good read, we're of the same mind on this. I've been a Strax too in more than a few games. I'm for the idea of a show of shorter series for them as well.

Totally unsuitable for 1 6.30pm time slot. However on the whole I loved the mixture of humour and horror, including plenty of references, subtle and not so.

The coda to set up Nightmare in Silver was horrible.

Overall, 4/5.
