The Inferno Project was conceived as a way to tap into a vast new energy source: Stahlman's Gas, named after the director of the project.  This involved drilling deep into the Earth's crust, a concept that has aroused the Doctor's suspicions.  And his suspicions appear justified when a strange, gelatinous fluid begins oozing from some of the piping for the drill, and workmen at the site begin transforming into bestial Primords.  The Doctor, however, has another problem on his hands when a power surge in the TARDIS console shunts him into a parallel world: same Project Inferno, completely different government behind it.  And the project is far more advanced here, which allows the Doctor to see the consequences.  Can he get back to the Earth he came from, and can he do it in time to prevent the destruction a second time?

What did you think of Inferno?  Let's hear your opinion.

Gave it a 4, on the grounds that I loved it on transmission, watching on a monochrome telly.

Wasn't quite as good in colour, somehow.

I gave it a 4, as well. I consider this to be a classic. Yes, you get the plot sort of re-playing itself, but then you events in one reality following a similar course than those of the doomed alternate reality. The alternate versions of Liz Shaw, the Brigadier and Sgt. Benton were a lot of fun to watch in their sinister creepiness. But what's always stayed with me is the memory of the incidental music.
