Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
The trailer proper is now up on my blog and I recommend you also go and look at it here http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/. You want Trailer 2.
I've also posted a set of screen caps which when clicked on provide you with some smashing images.
Enjoy!

This film is looking more and more like the writer/director actually has an genuinely fresh spin on the idea.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
But with nods to the past as well perhaps? The bit in trailer 2 with young Jim and the car over the cliff edge reminded me of the start of "The Final Frontier" and the sequence in Yosemite. The same Kirk spirit: determined, a risk taker, a thrill seeker. Constantly pushing himself.
The balance has to be right, but things like this make me optimistic.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
Agreed. IIFC JJ Abrams has been quoted as saying he wants to highlight the characters as much as the action and overall Trek "philosophy", and I'm certainly getting those kinds of vibes from what we've seen thus far.The Co=Ordinator wrote:But with nods to the past as well perhaps? Same here. It's starting to look like just the kick-start Trek needs, fingers crossed. The Co=Ordinator wrote:But with nods to the past as well perhaps? Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
You're all wrong about what the car scene.
What it demonstrates, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is that Jame T. Kirk is deeply into Canadian virtuoso rockers Rush.
He is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, re-enacting seminal Rush track "Red Barchetta" which also depicts a red car being pursued by a cop on something floaty. This is no doubt a sly reference to William Shatner also being a Canadian, which ties my "Neil Peart is Spock" conspiracy theory together nicely.

Well I certainly hope they gave James T. Kirk a more fitting beginning than the end they dumped on him.

Yeah.
It should have been an anvil.
It was Picard's movie, so there!

Ol' Billiard Ball Head is not only capable of holding his own against The Shat or anyone else, he could do it in a wheelchair. In fact, he did, if memory serves.

Yes, he did. He needed the wheelchair because the weight of his Starfleet pomposity was too much for his legs to take any more.Patrick wrote:Sid Seadevil wrote:Old billiard ball head couldn't carry a satchel, let alone Kirk's legacy.Dave Webb wrote:Yeah.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
Except the THelma and Louise style stunt makes the young James T. Kirk look like a screeming nut job, who would not allowed to enter the Academy, let alone be captain of a highly armed starship. As a friend of mine said, there is a difference between being an edgy risk-taker and being two stops short of Dagenham. The Co=Ordinator wrote:But with nods to the past as well perhaps? Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
But! We know that Kirk in his academy days was a "pile of books with legs" - evidence perhaps of an effort to show his tutors that he was more than just a risk-taker, that his drive and ambition were tempered with a desire to succeed the right way. We also know that he hacked the simulator, allowing him to win an unwinnable scenario. It's behaviour consistent with taking risk.
Picard is much the same - a young hothead early in his career, stabbed through the heart by a Norsican at which point he calms down somewhat.
Both captains have similar backgrounds in some respects.
Fascinating...to coin a phrase.

And between those two is where Kirk lives I suspect, it's part of what makes him interesting. We are talking about a guy who doesn't believe in the no-win scenario and gave a rather over the top speech about risk being his business. The Browncoat Cat wrote:Except the THelma and Louise style stunt makes the young James T. And don't forget that
- Spoiler:
- Nero's meddling with the timeline begins from before Kirk's birth. It's possible the changes he's attempting are at least part of the reason for the younger Kirk's somewhat risky behaviour.

Yes, I think you're right.
- Spoiler:
- Indeed, the things I've read elsewhere indicate that Cadet Kirk knows Nero's plan when he boards the Enterprise simply because Nero destroys Pa Kirk's ship, the Kelvin, at the beginning of the film. Also tie that in with Older Spock time jumping to meet his younger self to also provide a warning and a bit of technological help.
Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
Heads up, girls and boys! The trailer has been re-released with added Nimoy! It's right at the end of the trailer and you will definitely have goosebumps when he says that famous line.
Star Trek is back.
Hop over to my blog to see it or indeed over to the official site.

I like the added Nimoy. Brief, but still brings a big grin to my face.
