Well, I haven't seen any write ups about this in forums so far.. I thought Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock was fantastic, but not enough episodes.. What did you think? Did you like it? Or not?

I didn't like Moriarty or Sherlock's poor grammar, but I liked the rest of it. The first episode was the best - perhaps because of Watson's character development.

Thought it was brilliant. Best thing on TV since A2A and this years DW.

And it would appear that we are on for a second series Very Happy

I enjoyed it very much. I'm not sure I thought it quite as brilliant as some people have suggested (elsewhere) but am certainly looking forward to the second series. I loved Watson's expressions and body language each time he reacted to Holmes being impossible yet again but, like Lucy, was a bit unsure about Moriarty.

I must admit I hadn't intended to watch it as I tend to dislike Sherlock updates, but enough people raved about it for me to fire up the iplayer, and I'm ever so glad I did. Freeman absolutely nailed the Watson character - so nice to see him as a rounded, interesting, flawed human being in his own right, rather than the frequent TV/movie portrayal of the hapless sidekick. I was less sure of Cumberbatch initially, until I realised that he was actually making me rediscover, and dislike the deeply unpleasant Holmes of the books. I came to an understanding with the literary Holmes, of course, but that has always spilled over into TV Holmes. To be pushed back to that initial dislike of a character I've known intimately for so long was quite astonishingly powerful.

Yes, the stories themselves were a little flawed, but then so are the originals, but the characterisation was awe-inspiring. I'm hooked Smile

The actor for Watson was a good choice, wasn't he?

Shame about Moriarty, but hopefully in the next series he will (a) improve or (b) die.

Or (c) stay firmly off screen as Moriarty is rather more interesting when kept as a mysterious figure, spoken of but not seen.

My feelings exactly. Both characterisations were superb and Holmes was definitely unpleasant and rather disturbing really.

I liked that bit Very Happy Too many Holmeses are played as "very clever hero" or "problem-solving robot". Cumberbatch's Holmes is very much aware of his social deficiencies, and they do bother him though he tries to hide it.

I loved that little scene in the cafe during the first episode where they establish that they aren't gay. It was a very touching depiction of two damaged men who realise that they have somehow established a bond but can't quite work out how, or what it is. And yet written so lightly and deftly that we're left thinking that the lost crutch is the point of the scene.

I think that's at the heart of the show, and that it's the reason why I like it and why I watch it.

Post by Dave Webb Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:32 am

I really enjoyed the three episodes.

First, I've always been OK with not liking Holmes even a little bit. This is why I like him at all. I think if you're going to have an all-conquoring plot solving machine he really shouldn't be nice with it.

Watson was well cast and well played. It's nice to be reminded that John Watson was a serving soldier, a doctor and a man with an eye for the ladies.

It was also nice to see a Lestrade that wasn't utterly hapless and useless.

I was very pleased with Moriarty. You can't have two sneering archvillains in a show and there's only room in this one for Sherlock, so Moriarty really has to be different. He's childish and spiteful, whereas Holmes isn't. It's Id and Superego, really.

I thought stories one and three (Moffat and Gatiss respectively) were better than 2, but being fair the first one was all new and the last one was always going to be Reichenbach Falls just in case the show didn't get watched. So those were bound to loom larger than the one in the middle, which I think needs a rewatch.

Much fun, especially when you watch with a group of intelligent people and see whether you can out think Sherlock. Thus far, it takes three of us to equal one of him - and that's only because we've also read the books and have an inklings of what might be going on.

Absolutely. TV Holmes has always been too immediately likeable for my tastes, whereas Cumberbatch is delightfully unpleasant while also being rather vulnerable and out of his depth with human relationships. I thought this series captured that complexity of character beautifully, and also made sense of why the entirely decent, compassionate, caring Dr Watson could be friends with this impossible, arrogant, slightly monstrous man.

I thought that aspect of it owed a lot to House. But then, that was itself based on the Sherlock Holmes stories so.... I don't know, it's like TV's eating itself or something.

Exciting news that BC may be in the next series - as long as it's not as the new Doctor (yet!) that will be great!

Mr. Cumberbatch has already been in Doctor Who. He follows David Tennant's lead by playing a minor role or two in a Big Finnish Audio. In the case of Mr. Cumberbatch, he plays Howard Carter in a 7th Doctor story. I forget which.

I've finally managed to watch episode 3
(slow but sure - that's me rendeer )

I'm in agreement with most of you - really liked the casting. I thought I'd hate a "bringing up to date" reworking of Holmes, especially as I mostly dislike films of books - really liked it! I'm also really pleased that we've got back to the unpleasant Holmes of the books.
Both self and daughter were irritated by the predictable cliffhanger ending - looking forward to how that'll be resolved in the next episode (I refuse to call a 3 episode run a series!)

A superb mini-series it was. And an near flawless example of how to update a classic without compromising the power of the original.

As for the House=Holmes references: there's also the fact that in earlier seasons House's apartment number was 221B. Not to mention that his best friend Doctor James Wilson=Doctor John Watson. With Cuddy alternating between the roles of Lastrade, Mrs. Hudson and Irene Adler, depending on the need of the particular story.

While House's team pretty much=The Baker Street Irregulars.
