Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe

Post by Nick Barlow on Wed Nov 19, 2008 2:50 am

First episode was on last night - and it's here on iPlayer if you missed it.

I was thinking it was a 'nothing particularly brilliant' episode until they showed Paul Ross' Big Black Book Of Horror. Surely I can't be alone in wanting to get The Paranormal Channel just to see how bad it is...

Funnily enough I actually happened upon the show in question just yesterday while doing a rescan on one of my satellite boxes. Take Charlie's word for it - it really justifies the channel it's on. Anything that awful that manages to actually make it on to the airwaves MUST be paranormal! affraid

Paranormal TV of any kind, any at all, is generally bad.

It's sensationalist, which crowds out the groups of amateur scientists out there that are working with decent skeptical criteria and methods. They tend not to find much.

On the other hand, if you can take someone's delusions and turn them into demonic possession then you have a future in TV!

Saw the TV writers episode of this the other night - RTD was as entertaining an interviewee as always, and the others were all very watchable, particularly Graham Linehan.

Are all writers so god-damned depressed? I mean, life must be so hard for 'em.... Laughing They should get proper jobs, and see how hard that is...

Only kidding! I watched this on Sunday, and it was a very enlightening show. And it was nice to know that some of the struggles I go through whenever I try my hand at that kind of thing (not often!) are very similar to other, better writers. It gave me a bit of a buzz, and inspired me more than a little. Great show.
