The phrase 'classic' is thrown around too lightly nowadays but, nevertheless, sometimes it is the only sane response...

Vivaldi Recorder concerto in C Major 1st two movements - Michala Petrie

Michala Petrie is a genius. This is my favourite Vivaldi work to listen to - also my favourite to play.

Gear New Year!

And, in the spirit of reflection that the arbitrary turn of a calendar page presages with a tedious and depressing inevitability, here's a song that's at least marginally appropriate...

Another live Mercury awards performance. The album is stunning - miles better than Elbow (although not quite as wonderful as Rachel Unthank)

As much as I like the Elbow album,I thought nearly half the shortlist was better than it. And I hadn't even heard everything on it, this being an example - although I have now ordered it from the library and intend to give it a listen...

The Mercury Prize should only be for debut albums anyway, I reckon...

My final selection for this year is an absolute belter of a "love song". Engelbert Humperdink - Too Beautiful To Last.

Rest assured my selections for 2009 will be as eclectic bizarre as in 2008. Variety always has been, and always will be, the spice of life. Happy New Year! Razz
