The new companion
Male? Female? Old? Young? Gay? Alien? Naked? What actors/actresses would be good?
Personally, I think Katie McGrath would make a good companion. What about you lot?

Re: The new companion
I can imagine that we will have a female companion. There have been very few stories without a female companion or female companion character. The Massacre and The Deadly Assassin are the only stories that springs to mind and even one of them features one at the very end. I wouldn't be suprised if we got a full time male companion too. After all, The Moff did create Captain Jack.

Re: The new companion
I think it'll be a female companion, regardless of who the Doctor is, just because it otherwise it starts becoming a bit too blokeish. Plus, in the current format, I don't think more than one companion works - if you're having to feature three regulars then it cuts down the rest of the time, or one of them doesn't have much to do.
My guess (and a total guess at this point) is going to be someone who looks a bit older than the Doctor - perhaps similar to RTD's unused Penny idea.

An older woman please. I quite like the idea of an Evelyn type. Would properly ring the changes. If Joan Sim was still alive she'd have been a good choice. Liz Smith!

Re: The new companion
Thinking about it a bit, I can see Smith's Doctor being quite strange and alien in a way that's a bit reminiscent of Tom Baker, with the companion as someone who provides a bit of normality for the audience. I'm thinking someone like Maxine Peake, Claire Goose, Naomie Harris or Raquel Cassidy.

Maxine Peake please. She is brilliant and gets better and better in everything I see her in. Marvellous in Hancock and Joan, The Devil's Whore and Little Dorrit.

Re: The new companion
If we have a younger Doctor, I'd love to see an older companion. One of Samantha Bond, Claire Skinner, Julia Sawalhawalhawalhawalha or Jennifer Saunders would be amazing.

Re: The new companion
I just had a thought, seeing her mentioned in the Guardian's TV pages today - what about Kate Ashfield?

Really don't fancy her, myself. Don't know why. I just never got to grips with her type of humour.

So bring Larry along.
I just want them to pick the person (or persons, should we get two) that wows them and has chemistry with Matt. Older, younger, Venusian...I don't mind.

I hear they're looking for a Doctor of Philosophy in Paleobotany and Botanical Sciences actually.

Re: The new companion
Another name that's just occurred to me - Lucy Liemann, who was Sam the script editor on Moving Wallpaper. She's got a good mix of bolshy assertiveness and vulnerability, and she played off Ben Miller in a way that I could see working with the Doctor.
