Caves of Androzani Empty Caves of Androzani

Post by The Co=Ordinator Mon Mar 23, 2009 3:25 am

It was 25 years ago last week that Peter Davison bowed out, and this past weekend The Ninja and I sat down to watch his farewell story - first time for GN, so I hope he'll post what he thinks in due course.

Anyway, IMO time has not diminished the impact of this story. Quite simply it remains on of the very best ever in the history of Doctor Who. A near Shakesperian tragedy, with virtually every character trying to stab someone else (metaphorically and literally) in the back.

Every aspect of Caves works. Robert Holmes greatest ever script, an innovtaive and totally brilliant directorial debut from Graeme Harper. Excellent sets and effects, superb incidental music, and an ensemble cast that delivers to perfection.

25 years on, Caves remains far better than awesome 10/10. Very Happy

I do like the flashback sequence.

As for the rest of it - yes, it is very good. But I've never felt it was the masterpiece that so many of my friends think it is. affraid

I concur with C=O on all points. The only place where I felt the production was let down was in the Magma-Creature. But the performances, the script itself, and the sets/lighting all combined to make this my all time favorite regeneration story.

What makes this story stand up so well over time is that at it's core, the story is about a deconstruction of the various facets of greed, and how they spread destruction in an ever widening circle. No one, not even the Doctor, is immune from this.

For Morgus, his greed is obvious. Spectrox equals money, and money equals power. Chellak is greedy for a victory, and it forces him to start making bad command decision. Sharaz Jek is greedy for revenge over Morgus, so much so that he's nearly been driven out of his mind. And the Doctor's personal greed is his curiosity.

In the end, the only innocent in this story is Peri.

It's good because it's dark and gritty. And has big guns.

4/5 from me. Okay, I can't argue it not being a consumate piece of drama, I just prefer the stories where The Doctor wins (or, actually, failing that, a story where somebody does)...

The guns aren't that big anyway.
