in the sleevenotes for the dvd it says the romans is a forerunner of the likes of "girl in the fireplace" and "the shakespeare code" what struck me was how modern it seems- very self aware, lots of jokes and great performances. Nero is really funny but there is a darkness here as the background of deaths(great stuff with the poisoners here)

i'd picked up the dvd set without a huge amount of enthusiasm but really enjoyed both stories. rock on!

Always had a soft spot for this. Wonderful, witty and although not quite on a par with The Myth Makers, it's still a superior example of 60's Who.

All true, and I'll add that I think it gives evidence to just how well the BBC can do period historical stories in any context. The fact that this was a story within a series about a group of time travellers was irrelevant- the period detail for costumes, sets, etc was quite good.

it was alright but perhaps lacking the finesse of the likes of the crusade or (if we can believe the photos), marco polo. i don't know if the budget of the romans was a bit lower

what really sets this one apart , having just rewatched it on dvd, is how close it is to the best of the new series- razor sharp dialogue, meticulous plotting and the people behave like real people(while still being larger than life)

rob shearman reckons(on the excellent piece about dennis spooner on the dvd) that this is the best story of the sixties. i don't think he's far off...

Right up there with "Marco Polo" and "The Myth Makers" as historical Who at its best. Blisteringly funny, wonderfully performed and such a great experiment, as most of Season Two was.

5/5, no doubt about it.
