Surely it's not just me?

As many of you know, my devotion to the Shirtless! one is legendary on OG and other places. I don't just watch Losty for him though (no, honestly. Really. I promise). I do genuinely think it is the most cleverly constructed and well acted show on Telly now, apart from Doctor Who obviously. I also believe it is seriously underrated. The number of times I have heard people say 'they're just making it up as they go along!' (people whose opinions I would normally respect. Also my hubby) If we leave aside for the moment the whole issue of how else one would go about writing fiction - of course they have a plan. And a detailed one at that. The entire show hangs together so well - there is so much signposting, so many themes developed consistently throughout the series, so much dialogue (and even shot) matching............they so do know what they are doing. And it's brilliant. Very Happy

I have recently rewatched the first 4 series (all that travelling I do, it has to have some compensations) and I was yet again stunned by just how good the show really is.

There are a lot of spoilers for the new series emerging now - with filming underway in Hawaii - but if people want to remain spoiler free that's fine. I'd be just as happy discussing old episodes or bizarre theories for what's really going on (my own favourite theory is space aliens and mind control but I have read many US posters on various boards who are convinced that in a US context space aliens just won't cut it. which surprises me (particularly in th elight of the latest Indiana Jones film)).

So - Lost. Brilliant or what? Discuss (clue - the answer is 'Brilliant' ) Very Happy

This site here is very good for Lost spoilers. I actually follow their twitter feed (yes I am that sad) and they get loads of information.

Be warned - although really spoilery information is normally hidden behind an 'are you sure' button casting isn't considered 'really spoilery' and since the end of series 4 saw several characters not necessarily alive - and we also have the dead people who Hurley (and maybe others in the future, who knows) sees, there is lots of scope for a name like say 'Matthew Waterhouse' to crop up in a headline which will then leave you thinking 'but Adric is dead. Surely Adric's dead. Blimey. Maybe he's not'. So only click if you do want spoilers. 'kay? Very Happy

It's not just you, nope.

I think the fourth season was very strong. Giving the show an end point to drive towards has really energized the whole endeavor. It goes off the rails now and again but it’s still interesting TV, and a bit mad too...which is always a good thing. Wink

It's absolutely barmy. Bonkers mad. Very Happy But they clearly do know what they are doing. I was trying to explain a voyager thingy to child number one this evening, and she almost immediately picked up a massive flaw in the narrative, which I could only explain away by saying that when they were writing series 5 they hadn't decided what to do in series 7 yet. There has never been anything in Losty so far that totally contradicts either the narrative on the island, the back stories or the forward stories. It's a really masterly endeavour keeping all those different timelines coherent and consistent.

Lost drives me insane.

I do genuinely like most of the characters, with the exceptions of Jack and Kate, because the performances are really good, really strong; with a confusing storyline like that, you need actors who can make you care about the people more than the situations and this is where Lost scores highly with me.

I mean, what's not to like about Hurley? Even Desmond Mua'dib was still engaging and likeable. Sawyer is awesome.

But the show has managed to lose me, because after the end of the last season, I don't see the point in asking any more questions. I'm not getting the answers I want, and the fact that I keep being strung along by the show has stopped making me intrigued and started making me crazy.

The thing is, though, I know I;ll probably watch.

An excellent start to the season I thought. Looking forward to hearing what the other Wrinklies thought of it.

Ha! You are pwned. Because in ep 1.3 Charlie says he can't swim. Then before he dies he says that he's a great swimmer.

YOU LOSE!

Having seen the first 5 episodes of the new series I'm enjoying it more than ever. Except I keep having to pause to look things up on the LOSTPEDIA. I mean, for example, I would have never realised that Faraday's mum is the woman in the shop that sold Desmond that ring when he was travelling through his own flashback.

I think the whole thing hangs together perfectly and there's things going back years that we haven't picked up on.

And I think I've got it sussed - the characters will end up living in the past and they will manipulate their past selves to getting on the aircraft. And the invisible guy in the shack, Jacob, is Jack.

I've managed to watch two episodes, max. (Non-we hubby...)

Would it be worth my while getting the box sets?

Oh yes - it gets better and better and it's worth persevering through the slight flabbiness of the first two series to get to the end.

Oh yes, definitely. Either the second or third best programme in the history of TV, for me.

Agreed. The show has it's moments where the story seems to drag a bit, due to the writers not knowing how long they'd have to stretch the plot out for. But now that a clear end point has been created, it's been fantastic.
