Here's the idea;- Every day you add a song with a youtube clip (doesn't matter if it's audio only) and eventually we will build up a picture of what the collective likes*. I'll be the librarian, keeping it all in alphabetical order and give out reference numbers and the like. You can give reasons for your choice and everything

*Or I'll be the only person who does this and I'll have a place where all my favourite songs are for when senility kicks in.

Robert Wyatt - At Last I Am Free
I've just lost the CD of this and am very frustrated. It's beautiful. It's what my brain plays when I'm leaving work.

Are we allowed to do the YouTube here?

Assuming we are, since if we aren't it'll just get deleted and I'll get told off, I'll put up one of my all-time fave-raves:

iLiKETRAiNS - THE BEECHiNG REPORT

I'll also add a linky-thing to wiki, for a bit of context for the song - The Beeching Axe.

Not wanting to be predictable or anything Rolling Eyes , I'm going to go with a Dylan song first, but one of his comparatively lesser-known ones:

I presume that we are - The Void's countdown hasn't been interrupted by The Wrath of Filth.
I like that song - though the (previously brilliant) video is ruined by the explanation at the end, which rather drills the message home a bit too much...

Perhaps - and I'd forgotten about that bit when I put the Wiki-link on...

Nevertheless, it's a strong contender for my favourite ever b-side. And, if you liked the combination of song and video, it might be worth checking out the animated version of their debut album Elegies to Lessons Learnt - the band's (sadly ex-)cornet player was mainly there for his film-making, and animated the whole of the album. He also used to provide backdrop films for each song at gigs, and control them live. Top stuff.

I'm seeing them in Manchester next month for the first time since his departure. Time will tell how much they miss him..

In order, then... Smile

Bob Dylan - Chimes of Freedom
iLiKETRAiNS - THE BEECHiNG REPORT
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
Robert Wyatt - At Last I Am Free

I've only seen iLIKETRAINS whilst watching the videos. They do go perfectly with the songs.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was ten minutes long... I didn't know they made songs of that length... I'm now trying to adjust to life without it playing...

Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?

It's a song that contains the line 'Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?' but still manages to be a joyous and life-affirming humanist anthem. (Oh, and I also made a video that fits it to The End Of The World)

As for the general question of linking to YouTube etc, at the moment we're only banning stuff that's blatant pirating of copyrighted material rather than fan videos, mixes etc. Of course, it helps that we're a smaller forum at present so don't get any legal attention. For this thread, you can usually find an official channel on YouTube (other video hosting sites are available) for most videos released in the past few years anyway...

I did enjoy it - though it's not my normal type of music. In fact, everybody give yourself a jolly good pat on the bag - it's a good playlist so far.*

Oh. OK, I won't post "White and Nerdy" then.

I'll go with something classic instead. Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. So good, and so beloved way back, that parts of it have become Metal cliches.

I nominate 'Pain In Any Language' by Billy Mackenzie and Apollo 440. It's the last thing he recorded before his untimely death. An eight minute electro-pop cry from the soul. The Bond song that never was, sung by the voice of God. Bless, you Bill.

The Divine Comedy - Songs of Love

In amongst a lengthy catalogue of brilliant work, this lovely, understated tune may well be Neil Hannon's finest moment.

On her own here

And with Judy Garland here

If I could only save one piece of music or song, it would be this.

Apollo 440 - Pain In Any Language
Barbara Streisland - Happy Days Are Here Again
Bob Dylan - Chimes of Freedom
The Divine Comedy - Songs of Love
The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize??
iLiKETRAiNS - THE BEECHiNG REPORT
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
Robert Wyatt - At Last I Am Free

I would have put the Judy Garland included version of Happy Days... but it didn't work for me.
The opening sound of Apollo 440 conjured up images of Colin Baker walking into a cave. Got better after that, mind. Mighty pair of lungs on that boy.

The Beatles from me today. I suspect that I'm going to be the only person to put Beatles songs on here, so I better get started. Here's my mum favourite song:-

I''m sure I'll add some Beatles at some point, but not today. Today we have the only bit of music I've ever been inspired to go and buy on the basis of hearing about three seconds of it:

Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses

Bonus nerd points if anyone can tell me where it was I heard said three seconds or so. Hint: It's a TV show.

Ash - Shining Light

Today's pick from the C=O Library comes from their 2002 Glastonbury set. Just a great *pop* song, what particularly makes this for me are the lovely Charlotte Hatherly's underplayed harmonies. Smile

The video shows a fictional band named "The Killers" performing the song. The current band "The Killers" got their name from this. Plus they're from Macclesfield Very Happy
