Directors: Douglas Camfield vs. Graeme Harper

Post by Patrick on Wed Jul 01, 2009 7:36 pm

Now this is a question I think is particularly Wrinkly-worthy. In my mailbox today was the classic Who story Inferno. Now, I can recall several years ago, during my first viewing of Caves of Androzani with audio commentary that Graeme Harper had indicated he was heavily influenced by Douglas Camfield in his directoral style.

Camfield's style seemed to include things like close ups to show certain emotions at non-critical scenes, thus letting the actors' faces help convey the emotional content. He was also very big on having 'background activity' going on just out of the camera's focus.

Harper has directed a number of both Classic and New Who stories. So here's the question: Is Harper the worthy heir to Camfield? Has he, in fact, surpassed him? Or does Camfield still reign as the director-king of Who, with Harper merely a pretender to the throne?

I'm looking forward to some Wrinkly insights on this. I think a Camfield/Harper comparison might just make a nice article for Celestial Toyroom.

Your thoughts?

Well, Inferno is a third-Letts directionship. I don't think Harper's new series work is particularly distinctive, but perhaps that's because he's no longer following on from Pennant Roberts. Personally, I prefer Camfield.

Graeme was more than influenced by Camfield, he feels that he was more like his pupil and that he would be nothing without what Dougie taught him.

They are my 2 all-time favourite Who Directors, and I genuinely can't chose between them.

he wasn't just influenced by camfield's style- camfield was harper's mentor in many ways. harper was assistant director on seeds of doom and the nightmare man.

they are both great directors- camfield is able to make a rather uninspired script(terror of the zygons) into something approaching greatness while harper has filmed some of the most iconic scenes of the new series(doomsday, the return of the master, donna in turn left) plus his two greats in the old series.

an honourable draw i reckon.

As evidenced by the poll results I sent the C=O, I'd have Camfield as the winner.

But I still reckon Geoffrey Sax is the best director Who ever had...

Graeme was voted all-time "Favourite Director" in the DWAS 2009 Great Gap Year Poll. Dougie was second, while David Maloney was, an admittedly distant, third.

When me and Doc Filth were chatting to The Harp the other week he said "there must have been other good classic series directors" and we said "oh yeah, Camfield and Maloney". I'm glad he didn't ask for another one or i would have been stuck. Christopher Barry?

Isn't Graeme a lovely & incredibly unassuming man?

By the way, I believe he had 4 large grouses before his panel! Very Happy
