RTM - Usage

Post by Mrs Lee on Mon Aug 24, 2009 5:18 am

Or for it's proper title RTFM.
Our very first lecture in second year, we were told if we were being dense we'd be told RTFM. I haven't actually heard that lecturer use it, although that doesn't mean he didn't use it.

Although there have been times when I've wanted to use it myself, it's nearly always people who should know better though. Sorry just a little rant. Back to work now for me.

Anyone else had the need to use it?

Oh yes. Lots.
I was a tech author, wrote training manuals and have been a support-thing (first and second line, then management).

Being able to RTFM is really the only skill anyone ever needs with regard to software, so it's generally what I try to pass on to end users.

If they fail at that, I get to use a different set of industry acronyms.

I also get to use IWTFM, which makes me smile occasionally.

Needing to read the manual means the thing itself has failed, I reckon*.

But what do I know, with my namby-pamby 'Just Works' WTI**?

It's a favourite.

As are the I.D. - ten - T error, and also CTD, and LARTs.
