Primeval - New Series
I've just willingly sat down and watched the opening episode of the new series. All I can honestly say is...KILL ME! KILL ME NOW!

Re: Primeval - New Series
Crap? This first episode made the last series look like Shakespeare. It's beyond bad - beyond awful! God only knows how the hell they managed to brainwash the always brilliant Anton Lesser and force him to appear in this...words fail me.

Re: Primeval - New Series
It premiered over here on Saturday evening. All that Sid says is true- the story was a mess, with acting performances that looked mailed in all over the place. I'm willing to give the second episode a chance, just to see if they can fix the issues that went wrong with the first episode, but I'm not hopeful.

Re: Primeval - New Series
I'll give the second episode a chance too. But saying I'm not hopeful would be something of an understatement. How the hell can they have succeeded in making this show worse than it already was?
It's now so awful that it's crossed the line into Demons levels of ineptness.

Re: Primeval - New Series
I certainly agree with your comparison, Sid. The funny thing is, when Demons premiered on BBC-America, the network hyped it mercilessly! You'd think the series was the next Lost or 24 by the way they promoted it. Even after it ran it's single season, they brought it back once in 2010 as a re-run.
So while they tried to figure out a way to get an awful program to find its audience, they passed entirely on "Sherlock" because it was only three feature length episodes.
Oh well, fortunately, Primeval can't be more than a few episodes long. Then we get something called Bedlam.

Re: Primeval - New Series
They passed on Sherlock for Demons??!!
As for Bedlam, that's an original drama commissioned for the "Living" group of cable/satellite channels over here. If I remember right, it's a supernatural series set in a former insane asylum that's been converted into luxury apartments. Sounds as if each episode will focus on the haunting of an individual apartment and its occupier/s. Stars singer turned actor, Will Young.
Sounds potentially interesting. Certainly, I confidently predict it cannot be any worse than Primeval.

Re: Primeval - New Series
I'd actually caught a few episodes of the earlier series on Watch, and while they were rubbish, by series 3 it had all become slightly bonkers rubbish and all going at such a pace that if you were only half-watching it while killing time until Masterchef Australia came on, it wasn't too bad.
So I didn't have high hopes when I sat down to watch it last week, but I was at least hoping it might be a diverting hour. Sadly, I'm in absolute agreement with you two in finding it absolutely awful with the plot only making sense if you assumed that every character in it was so stupid they had problems getting dressed without assistance. Well, not all of them - Ben Miller plays it with the air of someone who knows how awful it is, but he's got bills to pay and he can do 'slightly arch' in his sleep.

Re: Primeval - New Series
Agreed about Ben Miller. He;'s actually been the only truly consistent - in a good way - thing about the show from the outset. As for Anton Lesser and Alexander Siddig - they deserve so much better than this.

That's an indictment if I've heard one. Episode 2 airs tonight, and as I said, I'll have a viewing of it and see if the show can pull itself out of the hole it dug in Episode 1. My hopes aren't particularly high, but then going into it without any particular high expectations may be a good thing.
If nothing else, it'll be an hour of being able to watch Hannah Spearritt.

Re: Primeval - New Series
At least in the gap between series Hannah appears to have put some much needed weight on. Compared to how she was, she looks decidedly womanly now. And is all the better for it.

Re: Primeval - New Series
Astonishingly, this week's episode actually succeed in being worse than its immediate predecessor!
Ben Miller was the most fortunate by dint of managing to escape by not appearing at all. Anton Lesser was slightly less fortunate by only having a single scene to appear in - while poor old Alexander Siddig openly broke the forth wall by screaming for someone (presumably his Agent) to "Get me out of here!" during the middle of a scene!
It's surely a sign of the forthcoming apocalypse that of the remainder of the younger cast it was Hannah Spearritt, who confounded all expectations by putting in the most accomplished and professional performance. Hannah Spearritt!
Astonishing on every single level and for all the very worst of reasons.

Ouch. What a blistering review, Sid.
Episode 2 doesn't air over here for another four hours, but at least I now know what I'm in for if I watch it tonight.

That bad, huh? Tell me, do you think it's reached Demons level of awfulness?

Oh, dear. I'll watch tonight until I can't stand any more, and then find a DVD to watch. Something Dark-n-GrittyTM. Perhaps Sin City.
