The Williams era was, for me, probably the one that struck me as the most wildly inconsistent periods of the show in its classic period. For example, The Key to Time season was, I thought, a brilliant idea, but The Armeggedon Factor was an awful climax to it. During this era, you would go from a truly spellbinding classic, like Horror of Fang Rock or The Sun Makers, to a true clunker, like Underworld or The Invisible Enemy. And Season 17 is one of my least favorite seasons for the whole show. With the exception of City of Death, the rest of S-17 is pretty forgettable.

2/5 for me.

I've given it a 3/5 because, as Patrick said, it's all over the place. I like Armageddon Factor though.

4-unfairly maligned i reckon.

for me dr who needs jokes, over the top villains and monsters. and season 17 is great! i'm a bit of a fan of douglas adams anyway and think he put in loads of brilliant concepts and ideas. admittedly the execution was sometimes off but when wasn't it?

5/5
Along with the Hinchcliff era, the first two years of Hartnell and the new series, as close to perfection as Dr Who comes. Yes, visually it can be dreadful at times, but from a story point of view it's one of the most ambitious of all 26 years of the classic series, and regularly contained some of the best dialogue, ideas, and actual scripts to grace the original series.

About the worst thing you could say about a story from this era is that it was boring... and about the only story that could actually be called that was Underworld.

How can any era that contains such masterpieces as
Horror of Fang Rock
Image of the Fendahl
The Sunmakers
The Pirate Planet
The Stones of Blood
The Androids of Tara
The City of Death
The Nightmare of Eden
be called bad is beyond me.

In my opinion, mind. Very Happy

I'm giving it four out of five. I was teetering on three... but I thought that might just be because I've spent the last three nights watching The Armageddon Factor and the two commentaries for it...

Three out of five, but it's by no means Average.

City of Death still leaves me cold; it's Doctor Who trying simply too hard to be impressive. I'm not much of a fan of Adams' period as script editor, which is odd considering how much of a Douglas Adams fan I am in general, and I've come to dislike The Key To Time, which wasn't as good as I remembered it. Actually, The Power of Kroll was exactly as I remembered it, and oh lord I wish it wasn't.

I gave it 3 out of 5. I agree that its all over the place quality wise. On the one hand there are 'City of Death' & 'The Stones of Blood' and on the other hand the likes of 'Horns of Nimon'.

If we took just the Key to Time series I'd give it a 5. If we take the era as a whole 3 - 3.5 at the most.
