Apple iPad

Post by Mrs Lee on Wed Jan 27, 2010 10:47 am

Well now that Apple has finally announced the tablet, anyone else feeling a little unfulfilled by it?

I'm not really liking that it uses the iPhone OS and as Steve was bemoaning netbooks because of their flaws I'd have liked the full OS... Oh well beggars can't be choosers.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

I don't like the look of it. It has no keyboard.

It will be interesting to see how much of a dent this puts in the sale of Kindles.

I don't mind the look of it and the price isn't too bad so I'm happier now... Although I didn't like Steve's negatives on netbooks because the iPad doesn't seem to be any better than the netbooks. Lee'll get mine when I'm bored of it...

Actually, it's most likely that I'll be able to use the iPad when Mrs Lee is using my laptop's superior graphics card facilities to play Sims3 on!

If I ever have the need to find out what it would be like to hold an iPhone if I was shrunk to 50% of my current size, then I'd have a use for it...

But then I did get an Android-powered phone last week, so I guess I've nailed my colours to the Google mast for the inevitable Great Format War.

I actually have had some recent experience with Kindles. Namely, that our library bought a set of them and commanded us book-buyers to purchase e-titles for them. As accessory information, they handed us the Kindles and offered to let us play with them.

So I turned on 'my' DX Kindle, and then said "What?! No touchscreen?!" Just buttons. Ewww. And oh - some titles aren't available as readable out loud. As well as that the page changing was dogged slow and ugly (flashes to black for no discernable reason), even on a new un-filled-up Kindle. The loading of newly purchased titles is clumsy and uncertain; the staff who will check these in and out will have to spend time fussing to bring downloads out of "archive mode" and other such stuff.

The DX Kindle is a near price-point to the iPad. If Apple can improve on the device's product purchasing flexibility and security (which are *horrible* for the Kindle) its superior interface, ebook format flexibility, and general pretties will spank the Kindle's sad behind out of the market.

Myself, about the iPad--I was momentarily swooning; the interface is right sweet... But the lack of camera (iChat and/or video Skype) is pretty tragic. And text/multimedia messaging. It's like a giant iPod touch with 3G browsing. Which isn't quite enough for me.

Ah, no, I'm with him being a bit down on the netbook. It's a laptop for doing your work, made smaller. That's... about it.

Tiny screen, all about doing typing work away from home. Fine if you have to take your word processor and spreadsheet and work away. You writer people are happy with that, I get it. But I can't *imagine* having any *fun* web-browsing with a netbook. Or watching a movie on the road. The wee screen, y'know. (I wouldn't watch video on an iPod or iPhone either. We know it is done, but not why...)

I like pretty toys. (I'm weird; I don't play computer games, but I websurf a lot.) I have ser-yus computers at work for doing work. Want fun computers at home and on the road...

I don't think netbooks can be that bad as so many people have them, ok I was an earlier adopter, can you tell? So my screen is not up to what the more recent netbooks, but the screens aren't as bad as what he makes out.

I disgree with you about the screen size simply because the screen size is bigger than that on the iPad on most netbooks and you don't seem to have an issue with the iPad.... That's my point though isn't it, the iPad has the same flaws as netbooks and some which are purely it's own; my netbook has a camera btw.

My work is purely on computers and the netbook works for me especially when I'm flying as most laptops battery life is far shorter than they state. The netbook battery however does last as long as they say on the whole apart from when playing games. Also if I've only got an itty bitty bag (in comparison) my netbook fits and I can get on with some work. It's brilliant for coding as standard, I don't have any software on it other than what was supplied...

Ahh and of course there is the security aspect, especially if you're using Linux...

I may just be a geek but I'm not the only one who swears by having in the arsenal a desktop, a laptop and a netbook... The netbook being the one thats used the most...

Interesting. This is exactly the opposite of my Kindle experience. Especially the loading of new purhcases (in particular, loading them via USB since my US Only Kindle no longer communicates wirelessly). Amazon should also push a software upgrade to your Kindles that sorts out the black flashing screen. I think a lot of early confusion about Kindles is down to newness and unfamiliarity. Once you're through the shallow learning curve, it'll be easier. And the battery life - about a week to a charge - is spiffyness defined.

Quite right.

Although the irony of you looking to Apple to break product purchasing and flexibility issues is not lost on me.

I found a dozen or so format convertors, so I can buy pretty much what I want, from where I want and read it on my Kindle. Why? Because it's my device and to heck with what Amazon, Sony and others try to insist about the matter.

The iPad is a superior bit of kit, though, and even a die hard Apple loather like me can't help feeling a general sense of "want!" about it.

I've had my iPad for almost a year now and I've been using it for scriptwriting, mostly. The CeltX ap is just fantastic, letting me sync between my phone, pad and computer. I find it much easier to write on than my computer now. Although it did take a bit of getting used to.

Husband wants one - his chum has one and loves it. However, there's the slightly problem of our main computer being a pre-Intel Mac.
