Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
What are your favourite comics, either ongoing or limited-run? My top ten are probably:
Watchmen
Preacher
Uncanny X-Men (Claremont/Byrne/Cockrum)
Sandman
JLA (Morrison/Porter)
Punisher (Ennis/Dillon)
The Avengers (Busiek/Perez)
Amazing Spider-Man (JMS/Romita Jr)
The Ballad of Halo Jones
Judge Dredd (Wagner/Grant/Ezquerra/Bolland early-mid Eighties run)
Anyone else?

Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
Marvel? No way! DC rocks my socks. (Especially the (late) Martian Manhunter.)
Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
I like DC as well, but Marvel has just as many good characters - Spidey, Cap, Hawkeye, the core X-Men, the Thing, Doctor Doom - and when written by the right writers, they're far more entertaining than the somewhat blander DC ones. I only really like Batman and Superman when they're working with the JLA; in fact I think the only solo character I've really got time for at DC is Green Arrow.
Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
I'm much more of a DC fan than a Marvel one, though I tend to find Superman pretty dull. Anyway, my top 10 would be:
Watchmen
Denny O'Neill's version of The Question
V For Vendetta
Hectic Planet/Pirate Corp$
Milk and Cheese
Kingdom Come
Global Frequency
Y: The Last Man
Hellblazer
The Authority (with Jenny Sparks, at least)

Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
The Ellis/Hitch run on The Authority almost made it into my Top 10, too . In fact, it's a bit of a crying shame that there's no Warren Ellis in there at all.

Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
I can see I'm really going to have get round to getting some Hellblazer. Is it all good, or just specific writers (I've read some of the Ennis stuff)?
Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
Hellblazer's a bit like Who - different people like different eras of it, so if you don't like the early stuff, jump ahead and see if something else grabs you instead.
Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
I'll probably try the Ennis ones first. I like Ennis .

you can't go wrong with the first 80 issues- half delano /half ennis. after that it was all downhill for me- i lost interest during paul jenkins' run. warren ellis was dissappointing by his standards. azzarello didn't do it for me, carey was ok from what i read. didn't like mina's run at all and haven't read anything by andy diggle.
BUT- i picked up 250 for old times sake and enjoyed it- and then bought the first issue of pete milligan's new run and really liked it.
delano was still the best for me though- "the fear machine" and "the family man" are out in TB now colin and well worth getting. and a special mention for "son of man" and "fear and loathing" by garth ennis

Thankd for that, Barnaby. Sounds like good advice.
Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
Only 10? Hrmm. That's going to require some pondering...
I like DC and Marvel about equally. I find sometimes I'm in the mood for DC's heroes, which are often like modern gods on Earth, and sometimes I'm in the mood for Marvel's, the underdog types. Right now I'm enjoying Marvel more.Doc Filth wrote:I like DC as well, but Marvel has just as many good characters - Spidey, Cap, Hawkeye, the core X-Men, the Thing, Doctor Doom - and when written by the right writers, they're far more entertaining than the somewhat blander DC ones. Marvelman/Miracleman
Secret Wars
X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga
Planetary
V for Vendetta
Watchmen
Batman: Year One
Preacher
Captain Britain/Excalibur (all the stories tied together from Moore, Claremont, Delano and Davis)

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction
Sandman
Invincible
Kingdom Come
Planet Hulk
Nextwave
Agents of Atlas
Judge Dredd

Re: Favourite comics? (The obligatory list thread)
When I was a kid, I was into Silver Age D.C. , but the supply in Scotland used to arrive in a sporadic manner, and out of order.
I favoured Batman, Superman and Green Lantern. Used to read a bit of Supergirl, Superboy and The Flash, alongside a bit of JLA.
My mum threw out my collection. Including one with Batgirl distracting the baddies by having a run in her tights. Apparently, it would now be worth a lot of money.
GRrrrrrrr.

Poor Herr Starr. The most victimised character in comics, and I don't think it's until the bit with the cannibals that you first realise that Ennis is doing it solely for his - and the reader's - enjoyment.
"Wub".

It's when he gets to the Nazi helmet. "Very funny, Featherstone."
I don't think I've ever enjoyed a comic as much as Preacher. Watchmen might be intellectually more satisfying, but Preacher beats it for sheer entertainment value.

That's a bit broad - any particular runs? Has Batgirl even had a comic?

Read the first 100 or so issues - not quite 100, but until Ennis leaves. Read his appearances in Moore's Swamp Thing first and his appearances in Veitch's Swamp Thing cross over heavily with the first 10 issues of Hellblazer. Don't forget the Hellblazer special by Ennis/Dillon with a very creepy story about the Devil's confession. Then get The Horrorist graphic novel to see him wipped in an S & M club, drawn by David LLoyd.
