2009 Top Tens. Ish.
I had thought, what with releases drying up pre-Christmas, of making a 'Top Ten of 2009' list of albums. I eventually narrowed it down to a Top Twenty-Five - whether this is because a lot of good music was released this year, or whether this is because I had a job for most of it, I'm not sure (probably both).
And there's probably some great stuff I've missed - I haven't heard the albums by The Unthanks, Son Volt, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Fanfarlo, or Luke Haines yet, and that's just stuff I know I'll like! Peel knows what other stuff has passed me by...
So let me, and the rest of us, know. Top Tens, Festive Fiftys, Top Five Records... Whatever. If you've got an end-of-year musical list, stick it here. Order it, annotate it, or just bung it down willy-nilly. if you can bring yourself to pick an overall fave-rave, that'd be interesting, but that's hard (man).
Anyway, in no order other than vaguely alphabetical:
Gray's Two-Thousand-and-Nine Top Twenty-Five
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - Merriweather Post Pavillion
THE ANTLERS - Hospice
BILL CALLAHAN - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
BISHOP ALLEN - Grrr...
THE BOXER REBELLION - Union
BRITISH SEA POWER - Man Of Aran
CYMBALS EAT GUITARS - Why There Are Mountains
DEAD MAN’S BONES - Dead Man’s Bones
THE DECEMBERISTS - The Hazards Of Love
EMMY THE GREAT - First Love
THE FELICE BROTHERS - Yonder Is The Clock
F**K BUTTONS - Tarot Sport
GRAHAM COXON - The Spinning Top
GRIZZLY BEAR - Veckatimest
JULIAN PLENTI - Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper
LORD CUT-GLASS - Lord Cut-Glass
THE LOW ANTHEM - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin
THE MOUNTAIN GOATS - The Life Of The World To Come
THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
ST VINCENT - Actor
TAKEN BY TREES - East Of Eden
THE TWILIGHT SAD - Forget The Night Ahead
THE VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME - At Breakfast, Dinner, Tea
WHITE RABBITS - It’s Frightening
WILD BEASTS - Two Dancers
And...
Gray's Album-of-the-Year
DEAD MAN'S BONES - Dead Man's Bones

I do, in yer actual paid-for way (vinyl if possible, CD if not, downloads if necessary)*.
I had a job for the majority of the year, and a girlfriend for not-that-much, so what else can you do but buy records?
*That's not to say, obviously, that I didn't try any of them out before buying them...

I've got the previous 60 or so years to catch up on. I think I bought one new album...

Re: 2009 Top Tens. Ish.
I'm in the same boat as Barnaby. I think in the last year I've bought something like four CDs...
The Prodigy (Invaders Must Die)
Jonathan Coulton (Best. Concert. Ever.)
Amanda Palmer (Who Killed Amanda Palmer?)
British Sea Power (Do you like Rock music?).

Re: 2009 Top Tens. Ish.
I've already changed my list after remembering a 'guaranteed' top-ten album that didn't even make the top-twenty-five*! Oh, what a fickle business pop is...
Maybe I should try and sort out an actual top-ten. Not that I'm looking for stuff to do nowadays or anything...

*And that I didn't buy at all, but that's another story...
