i've just rewatched this. one of my earliest childhoom memories...and it's still great.

i love the way the first 2 episodes are all scary and "gothic" and then it changes halfway through into a completely bonkers court case. in hyperspace.

it's also good to see 2 strong female roles for a change.

ok the ogri are pretty rubbish but no more so than most over dr who stories. and the scene where they kill the 2 campers is probably the last scary moment until a young lad is a gas mask about 15 years later...

What Barnaby said. It does one of the things Dr Who does best, changing its tone dramatically half way through, yet is criticised for it. In any other tv programme, going from outright horror to court comedy would be lauded to the stars.

The only criticism I'd make is the lack of anyone being visible when Romana is pushed off the cliff at the episode one (literal) cliffhanger, but this has since been explained by Tom himself as something he felt was too open to imitation by certain members of the audience (remember, this was made just over a year and a half after the Deadly Assassin farrago).

I've given it 5. Its one of the stronger Williams era stories: eccentric English characters, elements of horror and Tom Baker on good form.
The justice machines are in interesting idea despite the elements of Williamsesque comedy involved.
