I've loved everything since The Girl Who Waited but I really didnt like this. It felt like a series 2 episode and for me that's not a good thing. An early RTD era throwback that I really didnt enjoy. Had some good moments though and Smith really is the best Doctor since Troughton. 2/5

What's not to like?

Bit scary, much fun, neat cast, and Mark Gatiss writes a corker single episode.

Hurrah!

It was fun, but Dalek did the same idea better. I also found myself nit-picking various bits through the episode - why did the sailor decide 'hey, let's defrost this thing here and now' for no apparent reason, for a start?

And in my head, the Ice Warrior ship that picked him up at the end was taking him away to be tried as a war criminal for the acts he committed before they became the more civilized race we saw in the 70s.

More to the point, what's a Russian boomer doing with a scientist on board? Nuclear missile subs don't have sample drilling scientists on board when they're conducting missile drills, so that's kicked the legs out from under the entire episode. Oh no! Now everything's pants!

Well, I loved it. Easily the best episode of Series 33/7 so far.

  • Yes I know it was a cross between Dalek and The Ice Warrior, so it didn't get any points for being original.
  • Warner and Cunningham were, as expected, absolutely bloody marvelous.
  • The pacing worked, no sudden rush to finish the story in the last five minutes.
  • When the Captain said "and he won't smell it on you, I got the feeling that this was another character too clever to be fooled by the psychic paper.
  • Clara is a refreshing change. Nice to have a companion who hasn't openly got the hots for The Doctor, although chemistry between Smith and Coleman is red hot.
  • Loved all the '80's retro tech.
  • Only problem wassss that SSSSSkaldak didn't have enough hissssssss in hisssss voice.
So 4/5 from me.

I like only two other stories from new who as much as this one: Tooth and Claw and Vincent and the Doctor.
An absolute dream of and episode. An old monster with the greatest reimagining to date (loved the cyborg idea) The out of suit was done so perfectly only seeing the claws and face.
And as a story goes, its the most exhausting episode I've ever seen.

Just sublime 6/5

Back to ho-hum humdrum after last week's gloriousness - it was nothing special but looked nice, had some funny bits, was a bit scary. Easily Gattis' best episode - 3/5.

David Warner was as superb as you'd expect. The whole thing had a nice Hunt For Red October vibe to it, and the "mutual assured destruction" theme was a nice touch.

Where I'm conflicted was in the reveal of what an Ice Warrior looks like outside his suit. The 3-fingered Martian was great. But it immediately put me in mind of War Of The Worlds and the 1950s movie. As I said, I liked it, but given that the story was set in 1983, it felt incorrect, or perhaps a better word is anachronistic.

Still, its definitely a re-watchable episode. 4/5 from me.

Well, that was another thing, but I have a feeling that we'll be seeing more of Grisenko - he just felt very incongruous at times, and I think he might be back.

I didn't catch his name. If they're not careful, someone will be able to do crossovers with just the characters that guy has played.
