Doctor Who - Myths and Legends Box set containing three stories rooted in legends and myths: The Horns of Nimon, Underworld and The Time Monster.
I kid you not! Verrily I say that the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
One of my top 5 stories in a box set with my all time least favourite!

Well if it's a minority, you're in goddamned good company, since I feel exactly the same way.Patrick wrote:I'm certain I'm in the minority here, but of those three, The Time Monster is probably the only one I have any kind of interest in seeing again. Well, I say 'interest.' That's a relative term.
I think I shall pass on this one.

Perhaps, unsurprisngly, I disagree with the evil Patrick/sheringham/Eocone/ Time Monsterlovers axis. As all sane rational people know, the only one worth watching is Nimon!

You know, I seem to recall after I wrote my Season 18 article for CT, you're first email back to me went along the lines of "how dare you diss Nimon!" Apparently, you weren't kidding.

Blimey, I'm in the sane rational people block. Nimon must be rubbish.

I can't believe you'd doubt me Patrick!
Good: The Chase, The Krotons, The Horns of Nimon.
Indifferent: Inferno, Genesis of the Daleks, Horror of Fang Rock.
Goddam Awful: The Time Monster, Kinda, Snakedance.

As for the others, I rather like Nimon, for all its faults, but Underworld is possibly the most boring story made after the 1960s.
I also have a soft spot for The Horns of Nimon. As for the other two...honestly, if they're going to release the clunkers of Who, I actually prefer it in sets, since that way I feel like I'm getting something for my money. For instance, I found Warriors of the Deep and K9 and Company both considerably easier to take as they'd both come with other stories that I like better*.
*Yes, I like The Invisible Enemy, mostly for it's sheer lunatic audacity...a lot like Nimon, for that matter.

Whilst I wouldn't disagree with that cutting and incisive assessment Rich, the biggest problem is that I find my asleep when they're on.

Re: Myths and Legends Box Set
This is a very silly idea for a boxset. Better to release most of season 17 in one set & bung Horns of Nimon in with Nightmare of Eden & Creature from the Pit.

I watched part one of 'Nightmare of Eden' on the bus this afternoon, via the gift of the iPod. That is all.

Re: Myths and Legends Box Set
I think they should put Creature from the Pit and Nightmare in with Frontios just to annoy certain Bidmead fans. They could call it More Than One Syllable In The Title Adventure Boxset.

Re: Myths and Legends Box Set
This is an odd Box Set to say the least. Still, I can see some of these stories getting more of a "Vanilla" treatment than others. They'd still get good quality restoration work done on them, but the extras may be kept to a minimum for budgetary reasons.
In the USA, stories are usually sold separately as well as in a box. I can see them not doing as well separately.
FWIW, I am the minority. 'The Time Monster' just never grabbed me and is more 'meh' IMHO. However, 'Nimon' and 'Underworld' were decent, if formulaic, T Baker. All of them are way better than 'Image of the Fendahl'. I look forward to the latter two in the supposed boxset.

Re: Myths and Legends Box Set
See, I really have a soft spot for the Horns of Nimon.
It's the story where Tom finally lets it all get to him, Lalla steps up to the plate and you can pretty much watch the 70s end right there and then.

Re: Myths and Legends Box Set
I love The Time Monster. I'm pleased it's coming out on DVD. Not too bothered about the other stories in the set, especially Underworld.

Re: Myths and Legends Box Set
I too enjoyed The Time Monster, isn't it the first story to feature the Tardis in a Tardis idea? I guess being a Delgado fan helps too...
Nimon as I remember only has the slightly dodgy monsters against it, and how many classic Doctor Whos are guilty of that!? Engaging, if yes formulaic story, but still a shame Shada didn't cap off the series.
Underworld didn't seem to impress me enough to remember much about it, think I remember some scarf shenanigans.
