A combination of new-ER withdrawal, nostalgia prompted by the end-of-series special last week, and cheap HMV offers has prompted me to pick up Series One of the show on DVD. Much as I enjoyed some of the later series, the original cast line-up was never bettered, and it doesn't seem to have dated that badly, apart from some of the haircuts. Quite looking forward to watching them all through again.

This is another one of those shows that was really excellent for quite a few seasons and then to me anyhow got really tired towards the end. I agree with you Colin in that the original cast was never bettered...the storylines were phenomenal, and I think everyone probably had their favorite character.

The final episode did justice to it I think.

loved it- and even the later ones were capable of some great moments- romano and the helicopter spring to mind.

but the early stuff- especially when mark tried to stop susan going on the train,- sniff

I agree there. As the show continued, I very rarely watched it. Generally, I'd only tune in for a certain guest star, like Ray Liotta. In those episodes, you'd sometimes find them recapturing the spark of the early seasons.

Just watching through Season 2, and it's far better than the first - it's like the writers took the time between seasons to look at what worked about the characters and focus on it more, so you actually begin to care about them more than the medical emergency of the week.

Not getting all the hate for Kerry Weaver, though - she's a little more officious about the paperwork, sure, but nowhere near the vold bitch that the rest of the staff are painting her as. Perhaps I was expecting something more of a Romano level of nastiness?

They had a comfy team rapport and Kerry is an outsider to that, so there's built-in dislike I guess. I liked Kerry, even when I didn't like the stuff she did, she was interesting.
