Orchids in June - Post Production Diary
It's been well over a week, so time for a progress report:
As all in attendance know, we recorded Orchids in June under less than perfect (but somehow entirely fitting) circumstances. The equipment used consisted of two Olympus VN series digital recorders, both of which made it home safe and sound despite the best efforts of four suicides to delay the post production process.
The first issue - how to convert the recording into something we could upload to the internet - is covered by the application of CoolEditPro 2.1, a fabby editing suite with a variety of useful tools helpful in eliminating background sounds and turning the production into something which showcases the talents on display.
The second, and rather more important, issue was how to get the recording off the recorders and onto my faithful laptop. The recorders have a USB connection and are supposed to be recognised by Windows as removable media similar to a memory stick.
They aren't.
Diligent research, and nearly an hour talking to the denizens of Club Fantastique wherein I imbibed no absinthe at all, lead me to discover that I needed proprietory Olympus software. This is no problem, I have it on a half-Tb external hard drive. On the other hand, that needs a step-down transformer and a US to UK plug to make it work. I have none of these things. I do have an internet connection and no conscience when it comes to solving problems, so after a wee bit of Torrenting I can upload recorder one. I do so, and I can say that the sound quality is all we might have expected. Which is to say that the dialog seems to come over pretty well, but the incidental music is a bit tinny. I think we can fix this.
Then disaster, like UNITE and assorted other workshy wretches, decides to strike. Recorder 2 will not be recognised by Windows, the Olympus software or it's own mother.
After a couple of hours drowning my sorrows in the Cigar Bar of Club Fantastique (which is sadly denuded of patrons, what with the smoking ban), I met a slumming commercial musician who believes he might have a way to get the audio off recorder 2. I shall investigate further if it turns out that recorder has a physical fault rather than this just being a software issue.
Let me reassure everyone that we do indeed have two complete recordings of 'Orchids' and the plan is still to use the best bits of both to create one perfect whole. Like great-great Grandpa Victor, I am absolutely certain that only good can come of this.

Well done with fighting the technical issues Dave - hope recorder 2 starts communicating soon - is it the one from near the table or the higher up one?

Re: Orchids in June - Post Production Diary
Dave has been very busy. Aligned with technical issues this has caused the delay. He's still trying to get it finished.

Somehow I don't think you're treating Sparacus' unique talent with the reverence it deserves. The Co=Ordinator wrote:
