Re: Photos of the new Daleks
interesting - I didn't know shoulder-pads had made a comeback.
(photos? look like renderings to me - [computer modeled])
not quite sure if I like it as much - I'll wait and see what the actual turns out to look like.

Mmm, if that gray one's just a rendering, they've managed some convincing scuff marks on the bottom bumper.

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
We should remember that Daleks have no concept of elegance.
My first impression is they've taken a rather nice design and beaten it with the Baseball Bat of Ugly.

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
The images have been *fiddled* with for the purposes of a magazine cover, for example the blue one is a bit darker in shade. However the Daleks themselves have been photographed.
I believe that the concept designer is a chap called Peter Mckinstry.

I rather like the new domes and skirts. Not sure of the need for the big, chunky middle section.

I have to admit, I'm not partial to the "big bumper" middle section either. But it's when announcements like this send GB into hyper-emotional meltdown that I really appreciate our Wrinkly safe-habor.

Apparently the photo embargo lifts at Midnight BST. If that's the case, then hopefully the awesome nature of these Daleks will be properly revealed.

Did Ace do the honors?Dave Webb wrote:We should remember that Daleks have no concept of elegance.

I have no problem with the design. It's not as slick as the standard one but there could be an in-story reason for the changes.

Well, it's one of those occasions when a design that we think has been more or less static over the decades, but has changed incremementally, is given a big alteration all of a sudden. You're right to point out that there could well be an in-story reason for the change...I think C=O hints at something upthread.
So while I'm not totally impressed, that's entirely because they've made changes to a design that I really, really liked. It's the same deal with the Tardis, the credits and the theme music. (Although less so with the theme, because Murray Gold has been tinkering with it all the way along).
Re: Photos of the new Daleks
At this point, I prefer the RTD era Dalek design as well. But I do like Dalek variants, so I'm hoping this will be something that exists along side the RTD era design rather than totally replacing it.Dave Webb wrote:Well, it's one of those occasions when a design that we think has been more or less static over the decades, but has changed incremementally, is given a big alteration all of a sudden. Apparently not - they still have that un-awesome super chunky middle bit.

I quite like them really.. It's a bit like when Ford bring out a new model; it's a slightly different shape, yes, but it's still a Ford Escort when all is said and done..

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
They are definitely improved by the front-on view, it must be said. I'm liking the rumours of stainless steel and orange versions as well.
Last time I checked the GB thread, one of the more... rabid posters was slagging off Peter McKinstry and his work in reply to one of his posts. Honestly, this forum is a lovely oasis of calm in times like this.

Indeed, it's been a horror story at GB.

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
It's precisely that reason why I left GB a while back.. All that sillyness and banning people again got too much like OG/DWF that it replaced.. This place is indeed a pleasure, and a lovely oasis of calm it definitely is..

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
That's a shame. I think the last time I checked the thread, people were comparing these Daleks to the ones in the old comic strips. I guess it went downhill again from there.Exterminieren wrote:Last time I checked the GB thread, one of the more... rabid posters was slagging off Peter McKinstry and his work in reply to one of his posts.

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
Are they actually going to be multicoloured or was this just for the radio times election covers - red blue and yellow that came out yesterday?

They're multicoloured Jenny. Blue, Red, Yellow, White & A N Other IIRC.

Re: Photos of the new Daleks
It's odd: originally I agreed with Rich and thought the middle section strangely over exaggerated. But now, whenever I see the Bronze Daleks, they look slightly weedy, and the redesign make the Daleks appear far more powerful (which is exactly the same feeling I when the bronze Daleks were compared to the orginal series Daleks back in 2005).
As always with these things, the proof will be what they look like on screen.
