Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
It was okay - more about the return and reveal of the new Daleks (that actually looked worse on-screen than in the photos - the back really is a deal less than great) than anything else. Jammy Dodgers, anger, and spitfires all highlights.
Amy's lack of the Dalek recognition factor intriguing, however.
First impressions - Davison out of ten.

I'm going to wait until I've rewatched it to rate it. My initial thought is that Rose is really crap at wiping out Daleks.

Gave it a 3.
I've just noticed: Victory in Europe= V.E.
Victory of the Daleks=V.D.
They must have realised, surely.
(Yes, I'm puerile.)

Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
That felt like a 45-minute commercial for the new Daleks rather than a story. And boy, they're ugly. Really not getting the love for the new series...
Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
I agree, on both counts. They look like Power Rangers or Tellytubbies.Nick Barlow wrote:That felt like a 45-minute commercial for the new Daleks rather than a story. And boy, they're ugly.

I would have to concur with m'colleague on this. Just watched it again, and most definitely underwhelmed by it (a shame as, unusually for me, I'd actually been looking forward to a Dalek tale).
And, blimey, I'm really not impressed with the new Daleks...
Still, there's always next week's to look forward too!

Not going to rate it till I rewatch - only getting 3 at the moment
I quite like the new Daleks - especially the eye - they are a bit chunky round the shoulders though - himself and daughter of mine liked them - thought they looked tough
I'm too am intrigued about Amy's lack of knowledge of the Daleks and also about that sodding crack

Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
Right then. Daleks back for good, the Doctor has no clue about people and spitfires in space are cool.
But...too short, too rushed and I'm irritated at the need to change the design of the Daleks for marketing reasons. Not annoyed, because I do want the show ro make scads of money for the beeb, but nevertheless....
Oh well.

Is it just me, or are the BBC getting very money-conscious because of the imminent election? If the Tories win the licence fee will be cut and the BBC will have to rely more on the money-raising power of merchandise.
Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
It was ok.. I quite enjoyed the story.. but "Spitfires in space?!?!" The daleks were menacing at first, until they rolled out the new ones.. I shall be waiting for the free one in my Corn Flakes..

Apparently they don't do toys in cereal any more
(Apart from DW, which is a serial with toys in.)

well quite...you'd expect the new ones to be better than the ones they replaced.

Yeah, they were more sort of, cuddly than dangerous.. and aside from exterminating several of their own, they didn't really do much.. unless of course this is leading to something else later on in the series.. (A bit like The Long Game led up to The Parting of The Ways, but you didn't know that until it arrived.) ..

Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
Rewatched the episode and, as is now traditional, would mark it lower than five out of ten now - a four or maybe even a three. Smith continues to be impressive, Gillan continues to look impressive, and there are some nice bits in there - but there was some really, really, duff stuff clogging the story-pipes. And then those Daleks...
Let's be generous and give it a four for the episode. Then knock a point off for the actually-get-worse-looking-every-time-you-see-them Daleks. Yeah, sounds about right.
So, so far:
'The Eleventh Hour' - out of ten
'The Beast Below' - out of ten
'Victory of the Daleks' - out of ten

I guess we all differ on the score given, if indeed we judge it that way.. On that premise, my scores would be as follows;
'The Eleventh Hour' out of ten
'The Beast Below' out of ten
'Victory of the Daleks' out of ten

Oh, absolutely, scores are all but meaningless in any real sense - but are a convenient shorthand, particularly for first (and second, probably) impressions that haven't had a bit of thinking time to cook 'em up to speed. And I tend to use a 'five' as a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable average score, so they can look harsher than they are*.
Delighted you're enjoying the series-so-far as much as you are, though!
*The two 'zero' scores I'd give for Whopisodes** are exactly as harsh as they'd at first glance appear, however.

Yes, I can hazard a guess.. I have always enjoyed Doctor Who though, ever since day one in 1963.. I missed quite a lot between 1973 and 1979 because of working hours, but was privileged to watch every episode from the beginning up to 1970.. Like many, I lapsed during the Davison/Colin Baker/McCoy eras.. and if I'm honest, Colin Baker was the only one who was never convincing for me..

Colin Baker's TV outings and Season 18 were my two periods of (deliberate) not-watching - although I have bought all the DVDs so far released (and, despite approaching them with a mind as open as possible, I haven't significantly had my childhood opinions changed*)!
*The extras and commentary usually make them worthwhile purchases, anyway...
Re: Rate "Victory of the Daleks"
Hrmm.
Somehow not as awesome as I'd hoped. There are things I liked and disliked about the Rainbow Daleks, perhaps they'll benefit from another viewing. I'm pleased to see the Daleks are truly back. To be honest, I was hoping for New Daleks vs Time War ones, warring factions. But that was me putting my hopes on the story rather than just watching it for what it was.
No score yet, needs another viewing.
