I posted this on DWF but I may as well put it on here too...
Enjoy...
INT.COURTROOM.DAY
A murder trial is in progress. The accused waits while
sentence is being passed. Next to a judge is a lamp which is
flickering. The judge turns the lamp off and then back on
again. It continues to flicker. Giving up, the judge turns
to the jury.
JUDGE
Have you reached a verdict?
HEAD OF JURY
We have indeed your honour.
JUDGE
And how do you find the defendant?
HEAD OF JURY
We find the defendant...
All of a sudden the lights go out. A scream is heard. A few
seconds later the lights come back on. The defendant is
lying dead in the dock. A woman in the jury screams.
WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN
BY JOHNSTONE MCGUCKIAN
INT.STEEDS FLAT.DAY
Steed is replacing a bulb in a lamp when there is a knock at
the door. He places the bulb on a table and goes to answer
the door.
STEED
Ah Mrs P...
Stood at the door is a small man with dark hair.
STEED
And you are?
DOCTOR
My name is the Doctor, I was
wondering if I could borrow a cup
or mercury.
STEED
I’m very sorry but I don’t have any
mercury. I can provide you with a
cup of tea though.
DOCTOR
Oh thank you Mr. Steed, that is
most accommodating.
STEED
How do you know my name?
The Doctor pauses for a moment before he replies.
DOCTOR
It’s written above your doorbell.
STEED
Interesting. At least it would be
if I had a doorbell. Anyway, come
in and I’ll put the kettle on.
Steed beckons the Doctor into his flat. The Doctor enters.
Suddenly there is a loud bang.
DOCTOR
Oh my giddy aunt! We’re being shot
at!
STEED
No, no Mr...
DOCTOR
Doctor, just Doctor.
Steed walks over to the table where he left the light bulb.
On the floor beside it is the smashed bulb.
STEED
Doctor. The bulb must have rolled
off the table and smashed. I am so
sorry.
DOCTOR
No need to worry.
STEED
I’ll go and make that cup of tea
and get this tidied up.
Steed exits into the kitchen.
DOCTOR
(Looking up into the air)
Alright, what have you brought
me here for. You’ve got me
meeting fictional characters
again.
Steed re-enters with a dustpan and brush.
STEED
We’ll have this cleaned up in no
time Doctor.
DOCTOR
That’s quite alright Mr. Steed. Now
I need you to tell me. Has anything
strange been happening recently?
STEED
Apart from that village Mrs Peel
went to, no, nothing at all.
DOCTOR
Village? What village?
STEED
A village where if you want
somebody killed you sent them to.
For a price the villagers did the
job for you.
DOCTOR
Sounds very interesting.
A car can be heard pulling up outside. Steed looks out of
the window.
STEED
Here’s Mrs Peel now. That’s
funny...
DOCTOR
What’s funny?
STEED
There’s never been a police box out
there before.
DOCTOR
Oh really?
There is a knock at the door. Steed goes to answer it. Emma
Peel enters.
EMMA
Some thing’s happened Steed.
STEED
Oh really Mrs Peel?
Emma looks at the Doctor.
Ah yes. Doctor this is Mrs Emma
Peel. Emma this is the Doctor?
EMMA
Just the Doctor?
DOCTOR
Just the Doctor yes.
The Doctor and Emma shake hands.
STEED
You said there was trouble Mrs
Peel?
EMMA
At a murder trial yesterday the
defendant was murdered. Apparently
the entire courtroom blacked out
for a few seconds. When they came
back on the defendant was dead in
the dock.
STEED
Sounds very dark indeed. Mrs Peel,
I think we’re needed.
DOCTOR
May I come with you? I was sent
here and I need to find out why.
STEED
Did Mother send you?
DOCTOR
Something like that yes.
Steed grabs his umbrella from it’s stand and follows Emma
and the Doctor out of the flat.
EXT.COURTHOUSE.DAY
Steeds Bentley pulls up outside the courthouse. Steed, Emma
and the Doctor all exit the car and enter the building.
INT.COURTROOM.DAY
Steed and the Doctor enter. The room is empty apart from the
body in the dock which hasn’t yet been moved.
DOCTOR
Where’s Mrs Peel gone to?
STEED
She went to talk to the judge, he’s
still here apparently.
DOCTOR
Ah right. I see. So have they
investigated the body yet?
STEED
Apparently so. They couldn’t find
anything. He wasn’t shot or
poisoned. He just died as soon as
the lights failed.
DOCTOR
Interesting.
Steed looks around the room while the Doctor goes to have a
look at the body. The Doctor pulls out his sonic screwdriver
and scans the body.
DOCTOR
Ha-hah!
STEED
What is it Doctor?
DOCTOR
Nothing. I thought I’d found
something but it was just a grain
of sand.
STEED
What is that you’re using?
DOCTOR
Oh this? This is a sonic
screwdriver. A useful little tool
really. I’m doing a scan to see if
there’s anything on this poor
fellow. And I can’t find anything
yet.
INT.JUDGES OFFICE. DAY
Emma knocks on the door and enters. The judge is taking off
his uniform. He takes off his wig and puts it over a bust.
JUDGE
Oh hello, sorry I didn’t hear you
knock.
EMMA
That’s quite alright Judge...
JUDGE
Lambert. Arthur Lambert.
EMMA
I’m Emma Peel, I’m here
investigating the murder yesterday.
LAMBERT
You think it was murder then?
EMMA
It’s certainly suspicious. Did you
notice anything?
LAMBERT
No, not really. Just that my lamp
was flickering some time before.
EMMA
Did you hear anything? A silenced
gunshot? A door? Anything at all?
LAMBERT
(Lambert hangs his robe up on
a stand)
No, nothing at all.
EMMA
Who’s trial was it?
LAMBERT
His name was Timothy Green. He was
accused of murdering Charles
Gethry, the diplomat.
EMMA
Oh, I remember reading about him in
the newspaper. The body vanished
didn’t it?
LAMBERT
Yes, it did indeed. Green was a
diplomat himself, not a high
profile one mind.
EMMA
I see, very interesting. Well thank
you Mr Lambert, you’ve been most
helpful. I’d better go and see how
my friends are getting on.
LAMBERT
Very well. Goodbye Mrs Peel.
Emma leaves. Lambers picks up some papers off his desk and
puts them into his breifcase. The lights start to flicker.
Lambert looks up at them. The flickering stops so Lambert
goes back to his papers. Suddenly the lights cut out
alltogether and the room is plunged into darkness. Lambert
lets out a scream. A few seconds later the lights come back
on. Lambert is lying on the floor. Dead.
INT.COURTROOM.DAY
The Doctor is still examining the body while Steed is
feeling his way along the wall, looking closely as he moves
along.
DOCTOR
What on Earth are you doing?
STEED
Come here. Put your ear to the
wall.
The Doctor walks over to the wall and puts his ear to it.
DOCTOR
There’s some kind of slight
vibration.
The Doctor pulls away one on the wall panels.
DOCTOR
Nothing, at all.
Steed looks closely at something.
STEED
Not necessarily. Look at that.
Steed picks up something small that is stuck to the wall.
Examined closely it’s a small device with a sensor.
DOCTOR
It’s a gun. It fires out tiny
bullets.
The Doctor runs over to the body.
DOCTOR
Ah-ha! Look here. I thought it was
an insect bite before.
STEED
What if it was?
DOCTOR
You mean that the device in the
wall could have released an insect.
The Doctor points his sonic screwdriver at the minute wound
and activates it. A small fly shoots out of the wound and
sticks to the end of the screwdriver.
DOCTOR
There we are. Now let’s have a look
at you. Steed, it’s robotic.
STEED
A robot?
DOCTOR
Yes, it is. It’s programmed to fly
towards a sensor when in darkness.
Emma enters.
STEED
Ah Mrs Peel, did you find anything?
EMMA
I’m afraid not Steed. How about
you?
STEED
We’ve found out how this man died.
A tiny robotic fly that enters the
body and injects poison.
The Doctor is fumbling in the dead man’s pockets.
DOCTOR
Here we are. A sensor. The robotic
fly was programmed to fly towards
this sensor and inject an
instantaneous poison into the
victims body.
EMMA
I read in a magazine a few weeks
ago that a company not far away
from here were working on miniature
robotics, this could be something
to do with them. Mansen Electronics
I think they were called.
STEED
We’d better go there and have a
look around then. Coming Doctor?
DOCTOR
No, I think I should go and analyse
this, see if I can find out any
more about it.
STEED
Do you have a laboratory near here?
DOCTOR
Something like that yes. I’ll get a
taxt there.
EMMA
I’ll catch you up Steed. I’m going
to tell Lambert, the judge, about
what we’ve found.
EXT.COURTHOUSE.DAY
Emma joins Steed in his car.
STEED
Everyting ok Mrs Peel?
EMMA
It’s Lambert. He’s been murdered. I
checked his body. He was killed in
the same way as that other man
EXT. STREET. DAY
The Doctor exits a taxi which drives off around the corner.
He walks over to the TARDIS, opens the door and enters.
INT. TARDIS CONSOLE ROOM. DAY
The Doctor flicks a switch on the console and the door close
DOCTOR
Now let’s see what you can tell me.
The Doctor places the fly on a table and pulls the sonic
screwdriver out of his pocket. He is soon interrupted when
the lights begin to flicker.
DOCTOR
Come on old girl. I know you don’t
like been in the land of fiction
but we’ll be out soon.
The lights continue to flicker. The fly suddenly begins to
move.
DOCTOR
Oh my giddy aunt!
The lights suddenly black out entirely.

Not bad - not bad at all, youngster. Just one tiny, tiny observation - Steed would never call Mrs Peel "Emma" except in the absolute dire or most unusual of circumstances. Apart from that, let's be seeing the rest.
