On the Outside it Looked Like an Old Fashioned Police Box
This 30 minute documentary on the wonderful Target novelisations was transmitted on Radio 4 this morning. An affectionate look back at an era that those of us of a certain age will remember very well, there's also some very interesting stuff about how writing novels about the Doctor should be done.
The show is now available on BBCiplayer for the next 7 days.

I listened to that. Sweet.
That's "sweet" as a retired English vicar might use the word.

Enjoyed it very much myself. Gattiss' deep love and affection for the subject illuminated every second of the programme. If I have one minor regret - it's that the shows duration was only thirty minutes rather than a full hour.
Apart from that, as stan noted, it really was rather sweet.

Good to hear David Howe being interviewed. His tome "The Target Book" that came out in 2007 is nothing short of Awesome. 10/10.

Very good - luckily I managed to turn the volume down during the excerpt from Pyramids just in time to avoid hearing the line "in the wardrooooooooooooobe".

I loved hearing a snippet of Geoffrey Burgon's music from "Terror of the Zygons" just before the end.

I haven't had the time to listen to this yet and am really looking forward to doing so.

I really enjoyed this, lovely stuff - apart from the slightly disingenuous complaint that kids today don't have any novelisations of their own to read.
That's true, of course, but they do get original novels written for them now as well as the shiny shiny box-sets to rewatch whenever they want.
As a child, I'd have taken that deal faster than you can say 'capacious pockets'...

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this last night before going to bed.
I ended up only slightly regretting that I gave away all my Target novels some ten years ago but decided to make up for it anyway by ordering David Howe's book from amazon.

Yes, I thought that more than slightly odd too. Of course, in my black-and-white childhood back in the dawn of time we had neither!Graymalkin wrote:I really enjoyed this, lovely stuff - apart from the slightly disingenuous complaint that kids today don't have any novelisations of their own to read.

Original novels are not the same though. They are not a way of reliving a favourite episode from the series when you don't have access to a DVD player and a telly.Graymalkin wrote:That's true, of course, but they do get original novels written for them now as well as the shiny shiny box-sets to rewatch whenever they want.

I think the main point that I got from that part of the program, was that Mark Gattiss really, really would have liked Terrance Dicks novelising his stories.

He could always pay Uncle Terry to do him an under-the-counter novelization.stanmore wrote:I think the main point that I got from that part of the program, was that Mark Gattiss really, really would have liked Terrance Dicks novelising his stories.

Yes, I think it's fair to assume that Terrance has done a novelisation of every new series story. He's just waiting for the green light to show them off to the world.
