Re: All time top ten?
Subject to change any minute, and in no particular order:
Citizen Kane (1941) - I know I know, but I even watched this 25 times as a kid. It really is *that* good.
Vertigo (1958) - Hitch at his peak, a dreamy disturbing masterpiece.
Airplane! (1980) - never fails to perk me up.
Jaws (1975) - almost a classic by default since the damned plastic shark didn't work, hence a focus on drama and stunning management of the three leads.
Goodfellas (1990) - not as fresh as when released, but does show how influential it really was.
American Beauty (1999) - a revelation for Spacey, Brit director Mendes and writer Ball. A movie for our times and all everymen out there.
The Elephant Man (1980) - or a handful of other Lynches, too. A stunning, humane picture that is by turns horrifying, surreal, emotionally draining and inspirational.
Alien (1979) - the original and best, knocking all other Ridleys into a cocked hat; yes, even Blade Runner.
Taxi Driver (1976) - maverick film-making by a maverick director, writer (Shrader) and cast; even they were surprised by the reception. The Dark Side of America brought to beautiful yet brutal life.
Duck Soup (1933) - everyone needs a bit of Groucho, and they don't come better than this.
