Celestial Realm or a Nightmare Fair?

Michael Gough, Billy Bunter & Edith Artois. Something very different. What do you think of The Celestial Toymaker?

Re: Rate "The Celestial Toymaker"
There's a massive debate over on Big Forum whether this one is racist or not... it's in there... if you're looking for something to be offended by... but the more pressing matter is the fact that listening to these episodes back to back is like listening to concrete harden. 1/5

Re: Rate "The Celestial Toymaker"
I would agree that it's not very good. And the novelisation is simply dire, the worst ever written.

reading about it, i thought it sounded totally amazing. sadly the surviving episode, the soundtrack and the book proved me wrong.

Re: Rate "The Celestial Toymaker"
I remember being rather taken with it at the age of 9 or 10 but then found myself very much less taken with it when I saw the surviving episode a few years ago.

There's another thread talking about Celestial racism now.
I bet you're all glad I'm keeping you up to date with this.

And yet, not one thread about hopscotching, which, let's face it is the meat of this story.

Re: Rate "The Celestial Toymaker"
I want to quote you a little commentary offered in Peter Haining's "Doctor Who: A Celebration, Two Decades Through Time & Space." I'll be curious to hear everyone's reaction to this paragraph on "The Celestial Toymaker."
Peter Haining wrote: The success of this story lies in the way it visualises a child's nightmare - the secret world of toys from the nursery coming to life, harmless games that insidiously graduate into something far more sinister, smiling, happy faces concealing deadly menace. In short, it was a perfect fairy-tale of the kind told by the brothers Grimm - a multi-level fantasy appealing to young an old alike, but strangely being more disturbing to adults than to children.

Re: Rate "The Celestial Toymaker"
Had Haining seen it? Because I think that's an entirely valid opinion based on what you imagine The Celestial Toymaker might be like when you hear a brief synopsis of it...

I cannot speak to whether Haining ever saw it. I know I have not.
