Re: Music Library
So, this guy comes up to me and says 'Can you help me? I'm trying to find a piano-based song by a Russian Jewish New Yorker based around a story from the Old Testament.'
And I say, 'Here you go, sir, Samson by Regina Spektor.'

Here's a song that makes me smile. And it's fronted by Gary Lightbody, the lead singer of Snow Patrol so if you like them, this is even more worth listening to:

I've never seen that before. Love the poem, but that's the best I've ever heard it delivered.
What this thread needs now is....THE CRAMPS - What's Inside A Girl?

There was a cover of that back in the late 70s by an LA punk band called The Dickies (yes, the band that covered the Banana Splits theme). Amazing version, it really did sound like the end of the world.

It's Sunday afternoon, I was bored, so here's a YouTube playlist of all 148 songs so far.

Bob Marley and the Wailers - Concrete Jungle
I only really like the Whistle Test version of this song. It's probably exactly the same as all the others - but this is the version I watched repeatedly when I was first getting into music (which, humiliatingly, was when I was nearly 16).

Re: Music Library
Curses, I was thinking of posting this today, as not only is it a stonking song, but features one of my earliest crushes, keyboardest Martha Ladley. Not only was she in Martha and the Muffins, but she painted the cover of New Order's Everything's Gone Green as well!Graymalkin wrote:As for me, before I toddle off to Granadaland, there's just time for me to show that, unlike Lawrence, I'm not totally against the Eighties...

Double plus blimey! You're the second person I've ever met who's actually heard of this! great song (especially for the Africa Bombatta line "Who wants to be a president or king?" only for Johnny to break in and say "Me!")The Co=Ordinator wrote:

Heard of it? I bought it on 12" the day it was released and for weeks played it on a seemingly near constant loop.

Another great example of how to 'do' the pop song.
In keeping with my aim of coming up with a wide variety of styles and genres for the library here's a little gem recorded live at the Jazz Cafe in 2006. The KPM Allstars - Grandstand.

Re: Music Library
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Included for a number of reasons, but primarily because of something I read a couple of days. As if he's doing a service to theologians by proving that there are beings on this planet capable of nothing but evil, Simon Cowell is reportedly planning that the first single released by this year's chief product of ITV's musical apocalypse factory will be a cover of this. It makes me feel ill just thinking about it, so protect yourself against the oncoming aural onslaught of a talentless moppet with a heart of gold and a triumph over adversity that warmed the hearts of the nation's idiots ritually sacrificing this song across the altar of Simon Cowell's hatred for humanity.
Sometimes I wish South Park was real, as this story would then end with a giant Leonard Cohen coming down from his Zen retreat in the mountains to slay the assembled forces of the X Factor.

Re: Music Library
Sounds like you're unleashing your inner Charlie Brooker there, Nick .
Anyway, excellent bit of music - is that the version they used on The West Wing?
Onto my choice for the day: I've been meaning to include some S&G for a while, and I'm in one of those melancholy wintry moods today, so it's not going to be a cheerful one, I'm afraid:
Simon & Garfunkel - Silent Night/Seven O'Clock News
