How do you rate "The Eleventh Hour"?
Re: Rate "The Eleventh Hour"
barnaby morbius wrote:not too sure about the theme/credits but they're not really very important are they?
Yes, it is a standard Dr Who fan response. "Well, I can't find anything I dislike between the opening and closing credits..."

Re: Rate "The Eleventh Hour"
Started by hoping the silly falling-out-of-the-TARDIS wasn't going to be how the whole series was going to go, then didn't like the theme music, then liked little girl being silly praying to Santa, loved the Doctor talking to her and essentially adored the rest of the episode! What was I worried about before?!

Up to 500k I would think Barnaby. The BBC Bigwigs take all the multi-platform figures into account when judging *success*. Eventually iplayer will be included in the BARB figures, but not just yet.

It's not a virus....Dave Webb wrote:
I was pleased to see the Doctor engineering a virus using human tools that would then affect human technology instead of thrashing out a virus on a macbook and uploading it to the Atraxi. I'm assuming he deploys the virus using something like Van Eyck radiation (how else does it get to the clock)?
Surely the argument against writing a 'virus' on a MacBook and it affecting the Atraxi is just as void as 'viruses' that affect Windows machines not affecting Mac's...

I understand the need to use a bit of visual shorthand to set the location, and I know that the country is dappled with picturesque villages that make for neat locations. It's just a cliche. It doesn't detract from anything in particular in regards to the story.
Sorry but Milton Keynes is a dump, I lived about 5 miles away and the only thing it was good for was Costco and the huge Tesco... Not really sure where you'd set it as it's not really a town/city that's made for walking what with the distribution centres dotted around the place with the millions of roundabouts. The only thing that makes Milton Keynes stand out from millions of other towns are the distribution centres and roundabouts but where would you film.

Re: Rate "The Eleventh Hour"
Thought it was a pretty damn good episode.
I was unsure what to think before it started, but thought any Doctor Who would be better than none. Matt Smith stepped well into the Doctors shoes, where I thought parts of Karen Gillan's character reminded me of Donna, would defiantly give it a solid 5

No. Just no.
She absolutely loved Eleventh Hour. Didn't go out last night till after it was finished, watched it again on BBC3 this evening, and caught up with Confidential on the iplayer.

I always thought that the key characteristic of a virus is that it spreads itself; the Doctor's software does this without any intervention from anyone else.
The macbook comment is a reference to Independance Day, in which Jeff Goldblum hacks together some hostile code that disables an alien mothership using a macbook. This isn't a slight against Mac users, it's just a comment that it's really rather unlikely that the aliens use a networking protocol compatible with humanity. Had Jeff used a Dell or a Compaq the criticism would have been the same.
Re: Rate "The Eleventh Hour"
Nope, that's not the correct definition of a virus, not going to go into semantics but what the Doctor writes is a Time Bomb.
From what I remember of Independence Day (I admit the last time I watched it was at least 7 years ago and I was incredibly tired) the code was uploaded which doesn't necessarily need a networking protocol plus I'd argue more about how would they know what code would bring down the shields. To a certain extent it's a fantasy that's not based on any reality anyway so it's kind of unfair to say that it wouldn't work. It'd be better to start at the beginning and say there's no way those ships would stay in the air.
Back to the point Milton Keynes is still a dump

Re: Rate "The Eleventh Hour"
Surely if you wanted a 'Memory Lane' kind of Orwellian story, set in an identikit hell where every street looked exactly, and banally, the same, Milton Keynes would save you a fortune in CGI?
Surely any civilisation sufficiently advanced that it has mastered interstellar travel would use Macs?
Sent from my MacBook. Alien invaders, basically... run!

Re: Rate "The Eleventh Hour"
The new action theme du jour is not All the Strange Strange Creatures. It has a similar vibe and melodic range--but this one is in a fantastic 7/8 rhythm done as 2-2-3 (would rock as a Bulgarian rŭčenica folk dance!) More complex structure, lighter rhythmic feel. Mmm. (Mind, there was the occasional appearance of the underlying ostinato to Strange Strange Creatures, in little dabbles here and there. But not the melody.)Rich Flair wrote:Question for Warped - were there any snatches of Murray Gold's earlier themes or was it all new stuff? I thought I heard a snatch of All The Strange Creatures, but my ears aren't as good as yours.

I love the new theme. My jaw was dropping at that intro. Kind of a [] "Noooo"[/] at the audacity of it. And the vocals. I started giggling because I could predict the reaction in several online places. But wonderfully bodacious. (I would think the fans of the Howell version would like it, right?)The Co=Ordinator wrote:Probably in a minority of one, but I've now decided that I definitely like the new theme and opening credits. The graphics, meh, I think the lightning and fire in cotton candy are a bit peculiar. But I'm not upset.

Excellent catch, C=O! Clearly something is amiss. Rory couldn't possibly have been working there for 20 years, and for anyone who wants to contemplate the story actually took place sometime in the '90s, we didn't have laptop computers with web cams in the 90s, nor did we have iPhones. We have a mystery on our hands.

The name-generating vortex lightning struck me as a bit odd too, but I soon got used to it. Maybe there's something more to it, a change in the vortex. Maybe it's purely for visual interest, who knows. I do like the strange/mad/spooky/fun vibe they're sending with those credits.warped wrote:The graphics, meh, I think the lightning and fire in cotton candy are a bit peculiar. But I'm not upset.

The Ninja and I both feel that the last 10 minutes of The Eleventh Hour match up to those of Bad Wolf & Utopia in wow factor. It'll stand up to repeat viewings for a long time to come.
