It's all kicking off in 15th century Mexico. What do you reckon?

the target book of this blew my 10 year old mind back in 1984. i knew nowt about the aztecs and very little about the first doctor and co, and it was very exciting to read a book which wasn't a recent tv story.

the show itself is a bit clunky but extremely well written and acted. 4 starz.

I'm giving it a 4. This story had with it the undercurrent of a theme about attempting to change history RTD would resurrect decades later. Besides, any chance to see Barbara in something other than a knit skirt is pretty cool.

Is this the one where our asexual virgin hero The Doctor gets engaged to a human, causing much outrage on the internet?

Yep, he's now exactly like Captain Kirk before Kirk even existed! Not canon. I'm giving it a mathematically impossible -5/5.

Or a 4/5 in reality. Great work by the cast here, particularly Hartnell and Jacqueline Hill. Solid script.

5/5 - one of my all-time favourites. An object lesson in writing for four main characters without leaving one of them in the Tardis building a electronic magic wand.

It's one of the best historicals with some solid, and at times scenery chewing in Ringham's case, performances. 4/5.

Indeed. He wasn't very good as Gail Platt's dad in Colonoscopy in Space though.
