A funny thing happened as the Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry Sullivan (IS AN IDIOT!) as they attempted to trans-mat back to Nerva Beacon station. Their trans-mat beam was intercepted by the Time Lords and re-directed a long way into the past. The Doctor's people have sent him to Skaro, homeworld of the Daleks, because they can foresee a time when the tin-pot pepperpots could become as powerful as Gallifrey itself, and they want it stopped before the Daleks ever get started. The time travelling trio have arrived at a point of climax in a nearly 1,000 year war between the two principal races on Skaro, the Thals and the Kaleds. But it seems ending the war isn't the big problem they will have to overcome: a Kaled scientist with a questionable hold on sanity has devised a new mechanoid travelling maching which will house the creatures into which he knows his fellow Kaleds will mutate, Daleks. So, does the Doctor have the right to prevent the Daleks from ever coming into existence? Are his eardrums strong enough to withstand a rant from this disturbed Kaled Scientist? And will the name Davros go down in history as being almost as important as those of his creations?

One of the most overrated stories in the history of Doctor Who. It destroyed previous continuity and saddled the Daleks with Davros for the rest of the Classic era. 3/5.

This is Doctor Who, C=O. Re-writing previously established continuity is what the show does. How many explanations for the Loch Ness Monster or the fall of Atlantis have we had?

For me, this story cemented Tom as the Doctor. His scenes with Davros were riveting, and the main reason the character has survived. It isn't perfect, but its cinematic and a well crafted origin story for the Daleks. I give it a 4.

No. Genesis of the Daleks didn't saddle the Daleks with Davros, the estate of Terry "I'll just slap some ideas down and then go and write grown-up TV" Nation did that.

4/5 from me. It's one of the best 4th Doctor stories, it's one of the best Doctor Who stories, and it deserves it's place in the pantheon for Michael Wisher's performance and for the "Do I have the right?" speech, but it gives us more than that.
