The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I don't reckon this counts as a spoiler, does it?
Eleven is depicted in his costume here. What do we all think? Me, I like it.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
To be honest, I'm a bit *meh* about it - from the pictures, it doesn't seem to suit him in the way Tennant and Eccleston's costumes did. Though that may be due to my lingering doubts over whether Matt Smith's going to be any good as the Doctor, which the clips the BBC showed of him this morning did nothing to dispel.
Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I agree with a Milk Bar quote - it's maybe "trying too hard."

I've never seen Brideshead Revisited, but I can imagine it being worn in that.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I think anyone who said "trying too hard" needs to watch The Enemy Within a couple of times.
My feelings - I still prefer Browncoat's idea, but this does fit one important criteria: a timeless look that is out of place everywhere, but only a little bit.
Harrison Ford had much the same look in Last Crusade and Raiders, IIRC, so we're teetering towards 30s (or 50s, with respect to something BCC has already said) academic. Which works for me.
As to Matt himself? I think, based on The Ruby In The Smoke and The Shadow in the North, he'll be fine. Possibly better than fine.

I like it. Do I love it? No, not yet. But then it's just a snapshot really.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I really like the little "professor" vibe to that costume. It's kinda sexy, geeky, oldish, and I do think he looks great with that. I don't know if it will be always like that but I did adore the fact that his trousers had a little hand-made turn-up *smirks*
Of course, now we need to see how it's going to work with his Doctor personality, but meh I'm positive.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I managed to be simultaneously surprised and bored by it, which is odd. I wasn't expecting it, but I almost instantly settled down to indifference.
It's not that anything's wrong with it, per se, and I'm certainly not going to use words like 'Doctorish' (I might be a ming-mong, but the vase makes all the difference), I'm just not sure it looks that good.
I'll be interested to see whether a coat is involved, as there doesn't seem to be any recognisable silhouette to the 'costume' or much scope for movement when the action-thing is a-going on.
In summary - anticlimactic, with scattered showers. Growing-on later.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
Well, I don't really feel anything about it... Actually, my first (and just about only) thought was that the bowtie was rather too small. I too liked The Browncoat Cat's idea better but this is probably fine as long as it is simply the basic look which will be slightly varied and added to throughout Matt Smith's tenure. I certainly greatly prefer it to what the Fifth, Sixth and, to some extent, the Seventh Doctors got lumbered with. Well, it was really just the flipping questionmark jumper with the lastnamed. And the fact that the poor old Fifth never got to change out of that beige at all.
There now, I think I've just talked myself into thinking that Matt Smith's costume is grand...

I think I'd prefer it to be on the small side than on the big side, though. If it was too big it'd be really noticeable - whereas with this it just looks, perhaps, a bit unimportant.
I admit I was surprised - from his hairstyle when they interviewed him, I assumed they'd go for something a bit more modern, as a contrast to Ten's rather normal pinstriped suit. Still, it seems reasonable. Hopefully they'll have a slight variety in the costume the same way they did with Nine and Ten.
Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
He looks like a geography teacher from the 1930s. I'm sure it will grow on me, but I'm not sure about it at the moment.
I'm very confident Matt himself will be excellent, though.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I'm not overly impressed, to be perfectly honest. There's nothing there that doesn't instantly recall a previous Doctor.

That's good, isn't it? I mean, he is meant to be the same person as the previous Doctors.Colin Hicks wrote:I'm not overly impressed, to be perfectly honest. There's nothing there that doesn't instantly recall a previous Doctor.

Well, yes, but their looks were all distinctive to them. This costume doesn't have anything that's uniquely Matt.

Actually it does... it has Matt inside it.
More seriously, I'm still waiting for the first episode. To see how he moves, how he speaks (yes, the language is very different depending on the costume. Of course, of course.), how he runs.
Because except saying that it suits him or not (depending on the different tastes of us all), as long as we haven't seen him giving life to the costume, I do think it's hard to form an opinion about it.
As you all know, I'm a DW noob so I haven't lived all you have lived with this show, all the different doctors, etc. Nevertheless, when I think again about doc 9... a leather jacket?! Too big? And doc 10... a cheap pinstripes suit?! Brown? And yet, it bloody worked and did create a huge wave of suits and converses all over the world (even if we must admit the Converse wave started a couple of years before DW.).
To sum up, because I do realize I don't make much sense at that time of the evening (), I'm trying to say that it's the man who makes the suit and not the suit that makes the man. ^^

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
Well, I think we may need to wait for his first episode or two to see if there is anything uniquely him. As Bonsai says, we need to see how he gives life to the costume. Anyway, I would much rather have nondescript than something like the Fifth or Sixth Doctor wore.Colin Hicks wrote:Lucy McGough wrote:That's good, isn't it?
