Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
We don't even know who Matt is yet. So far, all I've seen is him being the chirpy Cockney sidekick in that Moses Jones thingy, what was crap.Colin Hicks wrote:Well, yes, but their looks were all distinctive to them. This costume doesn't have anything that's uniquely Matt.

Now I want him to wear a lab coat in one episode.

OK. You all like the costume, fine.
I'm just not terribly keen on it.

Does that hairstyle count?

YANA - and when (according to the GBase news page), GQ, Esquire and all the 'this week, it's in to wear a gutted fish as a hat!' type-people are praising it, I'm happy to be on the 'meh' side of the debate.Colin Hicks wrote:OK. You all like the costume, fine.

Re: "A fashion pin-up, made by committee."
Haven't all the best costumes been like that? Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, Davison, Eccleston and Tennant all have costumes that wouldn't look out of place in contemporary pop and rock musicians.* I still remember one of the 90's Doctor Who commemorative documentaries featuring the Evening Standard's fashion editor saying that the only two people who ever successfully pulled off wearing a frilly shirt were Jon Pertwee and Jimi Hendrix.
The new costume isn't what I would have picked, but it matches the better costumes of the past, and is head and shoulders above Doctor's six, seven and eight.
And am I alone in thinking it works better in the photos without the jacket?

Better than Tennant's hairstyle, I think. But yeah, there are similarities.

I also find the description of Tennant's suits as "tweed" slightly odd - that wasn't the case, was it?
Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
No. Pinstripe isn't tweed. I'm a novice weaver and have worked these things out.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
For me, it isn't a case of liking or disliking the costume, it's a case of figuring out what the metaphor for the costume is.
Under RTD, we had a 9th Doctor who wore a battered leather jacket- a metaphor for the fact that we had a battle-scarred Doctor as the last survivor of the Time War.
We then got a 10th Doctor who wore a suit. The obvious metaphor was that this new Doctor was 'back to business.'
I don't know if the Moff is using the same logic in determining the Doctor's costume that RTD did, but when I look at that suit, the thought that comes to mind is "Professor" or "Academic." Whether you like the costume or not, I'm inclined to think that's the metaphor.

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I am such a girl. I found out that the boots are these here:
http://www.allsaints.com/product/?partner=buyat&prod_desc_id=5051214368139&area=M&category_id=4
...and then went out and bought some today. Apparently they are the last pair in the UK in my size (11UK/Euro46). I'm not even SLIGHTLY sorry about it. They rock
...and I went to work yesterday ina brown suit, rose-coloured shirt and a self-tie red spotty bow tie.
Maybe I need to join a group or something. Oh, wait...

Re: The Eleventh Doctor's costume thread
I'm happy to have never read the opinions of fashionistas on the matter (or any other matter, for that matter) till above link. Whether his attire is "very this season" or not is a matter I'll leave them to debate.Nick Barlow wrote:YANA - and when (according to the GBase news page), GQ, Esquire and all the 'this week, it's in to wear a gutted fish as a hat!' type-people are praising it, I'm happy to be on the 'meh' side of the debate.Colin Hicks wrote:OK. Some folks like it, some folks don't. Sounds about par for the course when it comes to the Doctor's outfit.

Or, perhaps, "Doctor"?
It's also interesting that the costume which was resonating in my head is Indy's - which Matt's costume sort of resembles. It's the 30s thing, I think.

Yep, but Junior had that look sometimes as well...
I doubt he'd roll up his pants though.

I quite like that on him! Maybe Matt should have a beard too?
