Someone new would be nice. I'm all for bringing back old adversaries, but I'd appreciate some new ground being broken as well.Patrick wrote:I wonder who Cumberbatch will play? Harcourt Fenton Mudd?

I see they've corrected the last films most prominent error then and cast someone who can actually act in the role of the baddie. Good news.

Yes, Eric Banana was awful. But to be fair, he's been poor in everything he's done, with the exception of Choppper.

Eric Banana? Sounds like a name Steven Moffat would have invented.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
IT HAS NOW BEEN CONFIRMED who Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing in the next Star Trek movie.
I'll give you a hint:
"Ah, Kirk. Have you ever heard the old Klingon Proverb that revenge is a dish best served cold?"

No, silly. It's the kid from "Miri" who spent the episode going "Bonk! Bonk! On the head!"

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
I find this somewhat underwhelming, especially given that the reboot effectively cleared Trek history.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
Underwhelming as it was a bit predictable, but just because it's an old character it doesn't mean that the story's going to be the same, I suppose.
Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
It won't be the same, for it will be the first meeting between Kirk and Khan, not the second.

I'm in no way an expert on Trek, but surely the first meeting was in "Space Seed"?

Yes, you're right, so it will be nearer that episode, rather than the revenge fest of The Wrath of Khan.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
(Bump)
Forget the rumor that Benny Cumberbatch is playing Khan. That rumor only rose to the surface because the part was originally offered to Benecio Del Torro.
So, we know JJ Abrahms' new film is due out next summer, and we now know the title: "Star Trek Into Darkness". Today, I found this bit of speculation on just who Cumberbatch will be playing.
The current odds-on favorite: Lt. Gary Mitchell.
Hmm.

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
Funny you should say that, Starfy. I was thinking that movie poster had a certain Torchwood vibe to it.
Now, you have to reduce the image in size that it all fits your screen, but have you noticed the shape of the opening?

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
As the film's out (in the UK, at least) it's time to revive this thread, I think.
Saw the film on Saturday afternoon and loved it - sure, it's not perfect, but it's big, bold, exciting and fun. In short, everything you want a Trek movie to be. Lots of references to the original series scattered throughout but not in any way that detracts or distracts from the story - in Who terms, it's like the Macra in Gridlock: a reference to the past, but not a reliance on it to tell the story.
The other thing noticeable is that the cast seem much more comfortable in their roles now. For instance, Chris Pine feels like he's just playing Kirk now, not 'the new Kirk', if that makes sense, and all of them have a great rapport together that feels like they've been working together for years.
Spoilery thoughts
I hope they're signing the cast on for more than just one more film, but if they don't, they can always jump ahead to the Next Generation crew. After all, Tom Hardy's getting close to the right age to play the real Picard now...

Spoilery thoughts
- Spoiler:
- Seems the first rumours were right, not the later ones - Cumberbatch is Khaaaaaaannnnnnnn! And a very good job he does of it too, to the extent that you expect his cryopod at the end to have a 'not to be opened until we need him for the fourth movie' label on it. (Next time will be something out in space with Klingons as the main threat, I would guess)
Noel Clarke doesn't meet any of the main Enterprise crew in his role, so no 'yeah, well I saved the universe with a tow truck' gifs will ensue, which is a shame,
And interesting that they've added Carol Marcus to the Enterprise crew at the end. - what will happen now between her and Kirk?

Re: These Are The Voyages...Movie Trek
I got to see Into Darkness yesterday. You will love Benny Cumberbatch, and I have to say that Chris Pine has actually noticeably relaxed into the role of Kirk compared with the first film.
A few spoilery thoughts of my own:
A few spoilery thoughts of my own:
- Spoiler:
- The final half hour of this film will either make you chuckle, or will infuriate you, depending on how much of a Trek purist you are.
Interesting that they put Khan back on ice at the end of the story. Presumably, that means he could be thawed out anytime they need to bring him back.
I, too, was a bit surprised that Carol Marcus joined the crew. Kirk & Marcus, Spock & Uhura. The Enterprise really is becoming The Love Boat.
