Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
For once, I'm not going to rate this one - at least not until I've seen the second part.
Hugely enjoyable, and exciting in all the right ways, but I suspect it may suffer upon rewatching (more a fault of the crash-bang nature of the 'finale' concept than the episodes, I suppose, and I've certainly nothing against the occasional big-spectacle, shock-laden, crash-bang-bonanza).
I did spend the episode hoping it would be something other than the Doctor in the Pandorica, mind you - that would have been a twist.
Roll on next week!
The series so far:
'The Eleventh Hour' - seven out of ten
'The Beast Below' - three out of ten
'Victory of the Daleks' - three out of ten
'The Time of Angels' - seven out of ten
'Flesh and Stone' - four out of ten
'The Vampires of Venice' - five out of ten
'Amy's Choice' - seven out of ten
'The Hungry Earth' - five out of ten
'Cold Blood' - four out of ten
'Vincent and the Doctor' - seven out of ten
'The Lodger' - seven out of ten
'The Pandorica Opens' - TBC

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
Finally I am able to give a 5/5 to this series. We've had some very high 4's but nothing this good.
I thought this was going to be very poor. The thought of Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Autons etc etc in one story was horrific. But no, brilliantly handled. For the first part anyway...
I love standing around and unraveling mystery type episodes, putting this up there with Utopia, the episode I consider to be the best since 2005.
And am I the only one who thought there was a Chumblie there for a moment until the camera panned and it turned out to be the white Dalek?
Please part 2, don't be a letdown!

That was absolutely fantastic. Brilliantly epic.I loved all the homages, Star Wars, CE3K, and the Cyberhead was straight out of John Carpenter's The Thing.
I loved the centurions being Autons, I loved the filmic nature - quite frankly I loved it all. Simply outstanding television.

It was indeed.. I can only echo your words.. My only fear is that it will all be resolved next week by means of some kind of enormous reset button.. I hope I'm wrong..

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
Good Lord, that was amazing. The opening (pre-credit) sequence alone wrapped up a big chunk of mystery about the cracks. Winston Churchhill, calling River Song? Brilliant!
Yes, I know there's a part 2 to come, but I don't care. Pandorica Opens was superb! I haven't given a five since 11th Hour, but I give it here.

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
The pre-credit sequence was awesome. There were some great surprises, some things not very surprising also, but all-in-all a very good episode. It'll get a 4 or a 5 from me, I need to see it again before I decide.

I watched the episode again late last night. Haven't done that for a few weeks. Still brilliant second time round.

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
So, so incredibly wonderful and brilliant.
10/10. Up there with 'The Eleventh Hour'.
Has prompted me to rewatch the entire series so far in HD before next Saturday. A meal as good as this promises to be deserves the very best hors d'Å“uvre.

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
The Pandorica Opens...and everyone turns into Dr Evil. All his enemies team up together, lure him into a trap, surround him - and then put him in a box, because they've all forgotten the number of times the Doctor's escaped from certain death the moment their backs are turned.
It wasn't too bad up to that, but for me, the ending is just a big let down only explainable by a universe-sized Stupid Stick - and the new Daleks still look incredibly bad.

- Spoiler:
- Yes, in one sense it seems to be logical that all the Doctor's enemies team up together to trap him.. However, in another way it makes no sense at all.. The main thing I just don't buy, is the Daleks teaming up with anyone at all.. Throughout their history, they have NEVER formed an alliance with anyone or anything.. The nearest they have come is when they have either used or manipulated someone for their own ends, or used some other race as slaves; e.g. the Spiridon slave workers in "Planet of the Daleks", or the Pig Slaves in "Daleks in Manhattan."
I think that all the Doctor's enemies - along with the Doctor as well - are being manipulated by something else far bigger..
I just hope that next week it isn't all resolved at the last minute via some convenient reset button.. It would be the biggest disappointment ever, if after such an awesome series, it turned out that the writers had created something as big as this, only to scratch their heads and say, "Ok, chaps, well, the reset button it is.."
And as for the daleks, yes they don't exactly look as menacing as the "proper" daleks.. And IF they have formed an alliance, they are no only incredibly bad, but incredibly weak as well..

I saw it at 3 in the morning wee and thought it was great, but I'll watch it again stoned soon before rating it.
Instead of 'To Be Continued' they should have written 'The End'!

I quite like that idea. But, we don't know how it is "to be continued." Next weekend's episode might just be a continuity announcer going "well, not that the Doctor's dead, the TARDIS is destroyed and the universe is beyond the brink of destruction, let's have a look back at some of the Doctor's greatest moments..."

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
My usual, thanks landlord.
Nearly a 4, but not quite. High points:
- Matt Smith's look of almost parental pride when the bad guys reveal they have teamed up against him. He's pleased they've learned to play together.
- the little nod to Douglas Adams, since a message to creation on a cliff face is his idea.
- the knowledge that they have, in fact, been shooting the finale all the way through the series. Neat.
- Rory's return, and his meeting with the Doctor, which was rather well done by Mr. Smith.
What'll lift this above the three is when we see the Doctor sort the whole mess out, assuming it's done well.

And by Mr DarvillDave Webb wrote: - Rory's return, and his meeting with the Doctor, which was rather well done by Mr. Smith.
I love the way the series is apparently presenting Rory as the useless gooseberry - even the Doctor thinks so (as voiced by the Dream Lord). And yet, Rory says and does things that really catch the Doctor off his guard and make him think twice. Like what he said in 'Vampires of Venice' about the Doctor making people want to impress him. It made the Doctor think about the effect he was having on Amy, who isn't the most mentally stable girl in Leadworth (or even Upper Leadworth).

I don't think there's been one. Personally, I feel that a 5/5 would be a story that pushes all of my personal Happy buttons. There have been a good few 4.5s along the way, though.
Nothing this series has made me want to rate a four, though (except the opener), since it's all been perfectly cromulent Doctor Who.

Is cromulent even a word?
Personally I don't really see your point, nothing is perfect but at the same time surely you watch the show to enjoy it. If I was to watch Who picking at everything that was wrong I would stop watching it as all of the episodes have flaws; all that matters is if the flaws stop you enjoying it.

Exactly.. This is why I left a certain forum months ago, because that is all they seem to do there, and more.. Like everyone, I think an episode was probably better than another when I've seen it, but the main thing is indeed to enjoy it.. And, despite what some may think of some of the eps, or the stories, or the acting, or whatever, it still remains one of THE very best shows on tv..

Re: Rate "The Pandorica Opens"
Different types of people have different ranking systems. Dave seems to have a system in which all elements are considered (which is more likely to produce a marking out of five more towards the centre) as opposed to an overall impression of a story. He can correct me if that's wrong...
I don't think acknowledging flaws doesn't stop you enjoying a story, in the same way acknowledging plus points stops you finding a story displeasurable.
